Page 9 of Becca's Trouble

Becca rolled her eyes. “I’ve already thought of that,” she called. “There was nothing.”

Genie scowled, walking back into the kitchen. “That’s weird. How can there be nothing?”

Becca shrugged.

“Why the mailbox?” Cameron asked, sticking his head out of the office.

Genie opened up the closet showing him the ten or so white boxes with red ribbons. “Becca’s been receiving gifts.”

Cameron turned to Becca, his eyebrows raised in disbelief. “I’ll have Dana try and trace these back to where they were purchased. Maybe she can discover who sent them.”

Becca’s lips twisted. “Emerich sent them, and I’m pretty sure he was flying a drone over the property this morning.”

“A drone? This is worse than I thought.”

She shrugged and gave him a sheepish smile. Yes, she should have told them before now, but she didn’t think it would go this far. She wondered what Jayne did with the cupcakes. She sure could use some sugar right now.

“Why didn’t you say anything?” Cameron asked.

“Because she’s still trying to decide whether to go after him alone or not,” Genie answered for her.

Becca threw a glare in her direction. Why did she always have to spill the beans about everything?

Cameron shook his head. “I can’t believe what I’m hearing. We are a team, Becca. We’re stronger together than apart. I thought you believed that too and were on board. Are you?”

His eyes met hers and held her gaze until she felt like shifting her feet.

“We need to know we can depend on you. That you’re one of us. This is a dangerous game we play and someone could get hurt.”

“You can depend on me. I’m sorry.” She was sorry. She felt awful. The worst part was the look he was giving her right then. He wasn’t sure he believed her.

And she didn’t blame him.

He stared at the identical boxes in the closet.

“Okay, we’ll need to face the facts that Emerich knows we’re here and watching us.”

“But why? What is his end game?” Genie asked.

“What it’s always been,” Becca said. “He wants anyone experimented on in their program who still has abilities to use for his gain.”

“And to continue his father’s experimentations,” Becca added, thinking of the drug cocktails he used to give her. They increased her abilities tenfold but also caused a lot of mental damage. She’s lucky none of it was permanent. But was it? Sometimes she wondered if she could feel things as strongly as before Emerich; she just couldn't be sure.

“Along with the cameras, we need more fencing,” Cameron said.

“I agree,” Genie said.

Becca zoned out of their conversation and instead tried to feel with her senses. Was anyone watching them? Unfortunately, she always felt Emerich around her, watching, waiting for his opportunity to strike.

“And no more meetings on the patio outside,” Cameron added.

“My dad’s office is soundproofed. I can have his desk moved out and put in a conference table instead,” Genie said.

“That would probably be a good idea,” Cameron admitted. “With a strong listening device, they could have heard everything we were talking about this morning.”

“Especially if there was a drone above the house. We haven’t been nearly as diligent as we should have been. That is on me,” Becca said.

Cameron took the first aid kit from Genie and led Becca to the kitchen table. “Come on, let’s take care of your arm.”
