She and Marcie linked arms and without looking around the bar, walked out the front door.

Cameron flagged down the waitress for the check while he watched the two men Debi had pointed out. They followed Marcie and Debi out of the bar.

Kyle got up. “I’ll go get the chopper ready.”

“We’ll be right out after you.” Becca slung her purse over her shoulder as she and Genie stood.

“Remember, keep a low profile,” Cameron warned.

Becca winked and threw him a grin. “Now, what fun is that?”

“Hold up,” he told her, then turned to Chet. “I better go with them. Can you take care of the bill?”

“On it,” Chet said and stood pulling out his wallet.

Becca and Cameron caught up with Genie, pushed out the door, and looked around the parking lot.

The two men were talking with Marcie and Debi in a black SUV at the far end of the building. “That doesn’t look good. Marcie, wait up!” Becca yelled and they hurried toward them.

Standing next to them, the men suddenly grabbed the girls, but even though they were small, they were tough and easily fought them off. Until another SUV pulled into the parking lot next to them.

Becca and Genie ran as fast as they could, pulling out their weapons, and started firing as the SUV stopped between them and Debi and Marcie. The man in the passenger seat rolled down his window, pulled out an AR-15, and started firing.

Becca dove behind the nearest car, with Genie and Cameron following suit as they all continued firing. The SUV was blocking their line of sight and they couldn’t see Debi or Marcie. They had to get closer to help them. Keeping low, Becca ran toward the next line of cars, still firing on the SUV.

The black vehicle pulled away, driving fast out of the parking lot, leaving Debi and Marcie still standing by the cars.

Alone.

Becca let out a relieved breath as she bolted toward them. “Are you okay?” she asked as she caught up with them.

Debi’s shirt was torn and there were tears in her eyes, but Marcie was grinning like a fool.

“Those guys didn’t have a chance. They tried to drag us into their SUV, but we got the better of them.”

Chet and Jayne quickly joined them. “Everyone heard the shots. The cops will be arriving soon.”

“So much for keeping a low profile,” Cameron muttered. “We better get out of here before those guys decide to come back or company arrives. Will you come with us?” he asked Debi.

She nodded. “For a little while, but I have to be back tonight.”

“You can leave your car here. We’ll have you back. I want to take you to our headquarters so I can explain everything we’re doing. Kyle should have the bird ready behind the motel across the street,” Cameron said, and they all walked around back and toward the helicopter.

“We’ll go with you,” Jayne and Chet told them as they rounded the backside of the motel. “We want to move forward on finding the other girls on the list as quickly as we can.”

“Good idea.” Cameron gestured for Debi to walk toward the helicopter.

“Are you coming?” Debi asked Marcie when they stopped.

Marcie shook her head. “Not enough room. I’ll stay here with Becca and Genie. We need to chase down those two goons from the bar and the ones in the SUV and find out whether they are working for Emerich. Or someone else. Once you join us, and I know you will because we’re awesome, we’ll get to hang out all the time.”

Debi nodded, gave her a nervous smile, then walked with Cameron, Jayne, and Chet toward the helicopter.

As Becca watched her go, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. Debi was going with them, strangers, flying off to an unknown destination without question. Why the sudden turnaround?

Was it because of those men? Had they spooked Debi that much?

There had been four of them armed with heavy firepower. They could have easily forced her and Marcie into the SUV, but they didn’t. Why not?
