She would have to talk to Marcie about what she missed on the other side of the SUV. Something was definitely off, but she couldn’t figure out what.

Chapter8

The helicopter’s cabin was quiet as Kyle flew back to the island, all the while trying to decide the best way to explain about their organization without spooking Debi more than she already was. Once they arrived, he led Debi into the kitchen of the main house and offered her an iced tea.

“How are you feeling?” The color was back in her cheeks, and she wore a pleasant smile on her face.

“Better,” she said and followed him into Stuart Marsters’ office. The man had been dead for over two years, and yet Cameron still considered the space his. Even Genie had left most of her father’s belongings right where he’d left them. If it wasn’t the perfect spot for them to operate out of, he would definitely have suggested finding somewhere else, but the island granted them all the privacy they needed.

Most of the time.

“Nice place,” Debi said, taking one of the wing chairs facing the fireplace.

“Thanks. It belongs to Becca and Genie. We all work here together. I really appreciate your coming. If you don’t mind, I have a video I’d like to show you. It will explain everything easier and faster than I can.”

“All right.” He picked up the remote and started playing the video on the television above the fireplace. It was the same video they showed Jayne when he was trying to convince her of what had happened to her as a child. The experiments that were done on them and their mothers while they were pregnant.

In Debi’s case, her mother only did it for the money and disappeared, signing over her parental rights to the CTA. Debi went into the system with Jayne’s aunt and father, and after the facility burned down and the whole program was shut down, she was turned over to social services and eventually made it into the foster system.

It was heartbreaking on every level, and he didn’t relish the idea of having to tell her. But she took it better than he’d expected. She remembered some of it, and luckily, she loved her foster parents. All in all, she’d been lucky.

“I’d like to call my mom if that’s okay?” Her green eyes were wide with vulnerability.

“Of course. Come out to the kitchen when you’re ready. I’ll get us a snack, then I’ll take you back.”

“All right.” The look of relief crossing her face showed him how nervous she was.

He left the room, trying to think of a way to make her more comfortable as she pulled out her cell phone to call her foster mom.

“How is she doing?” Jayne asked as he walked into the kitchen. She and Chet were sitting at the kitchen table with their laptops open and his files spread around them.

“All in all, I think she’s doing well. How’s the hunt for the others going?”

Jayne grimace. “Slowly. Good to hear about Debi though.”

Cameron’s phone rang. He looked down at the display. “It’s Becca.” He answered the phone and walked outside onto the patio and sat in a chair looking over the pool. “What’s up?”

“How’s it going with Debi?” she asked without answering.

“Surprisingly well,” he said.

“Did you ask her what happened in the parking lot?”

“No. She seemed shaken up when she got into the helicopter so I steered clear of the conversation. Why?”

She blew out a deep breath. “Something didn’t seem right about any of it to me, and after talking with Marcie, I don’t see how those men didn’t get both of them. They were outmanned and outgunned. There is no reason why they both aren’t gone right now.”

His stomach tensed. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying I think something’s off with Debi. This whole thing could be a setup. Don’t leave her alone in the house.”

He jumped to his feet. “She’s in your father’s office right now. I’ll go check on her.”

“Ask her what happened, then call me back.”

He hung up the phone and hurried back inside toward Stuart’s office at the front of the house. He knocked softly on the closed door. “Debi.”

No answer.
