Marcie shook her head and glanced back at the camera on the wall. “You have to get out of here. Don’t let him find you.”

Becca saw the camera. They didn’t have a lot of time. She tried to open the door but it was locked. She turned to Cameron. “Shoot the lock.”

Cameron hesitated for only a second before he nodded in agreement and pulled out his gun.

“Back up!” she said and Marcie ran to the far corner of the room.

Cameron fired at the lock, then Becca kicked the door open, grabbed Marcie, and hugged her.

“I can’t believe you're here. I can't believe you found me in the middle of nowhere,” Marcie cried out.

“There was no way I was going to let Emerich have you. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

“No, I’m fine,” Marcie assured her.

“Come on, we have to go,” Cameron urged, and they all started running down the hallways back toward the stairs that would take them to the surface.

“Wait! What about the others?” Marcie said, stopping.

“Others? How many are there?” Cameron asked, his face filling with concern.

“Six that I know of.”

Becca shook her head. “We can’t go after them. We’re going to have a hard enough time escaping this place with just the three of us. There is no way we can leave unnoticed with eight. Besides, someone had to have heard that shot. We don’t have time.”

Cameron nodded. “You’re right. We'll have to come back for them later.”

They all started hurrying back out of the compound, following Cameron, with Marcie right behind him, and Becca taking up the rear. So far so good. Yet, unease began to fill Becca as they ran, growing stronger with each step. No one seemed to be coming after them. In fact, no one even seemed to be around.

Where was everyone? And didn’t anyone hear Cameron’s shot? Even with her abilities, they found and rescued Marcie way too easily. No. She was beginning to feel more and more like a rat in a maze, being led exactly where Emerich wanted them to go.

They followed Cameron back up the stairs, down the hall, and into the watchtower room when she stopped. “Wait, hold up.”

They had reached the door to the room at the top of the stairs. Cameron was planning to exit the same way they’d come in. Suddenly, she doubted that was the best choice. Marcie and Cameron stopped and turned back to her.

“This all seems too easy,” Becca admitted. “Something doesn't feel right.”

Cameron hesitated, looking at the door that led to the roof. “We’re seconds from getting out of this compound. We don’t know another way out. Do you Marcie?”

She shook her head.

The tension in Becca’s chest tightened. “I don’t think we should open that door.”

“Come on, Becca. We need to get out of here. No one saw us, but that doesn’t mean they’re not looking. We have to go,” Marcie urged.

Cameron looked at her. “No one knows we’re here, Becca. Not even Kyle. We need to get out of here, okay?”

Reluctantly, Becca nodded.

Cameron opened the door and burst onto the roof, then stopped in his tracks with Marcie and Becca right behind him. Standing in front of them was Emerich and six of his goons, holding AR-15s pointed their way.

“Hello, beautiful. It's good to see you again,” Emerich said, his eyes on Becca. “I see you found Marcie. I didn’t doubt you would for a second. Good job.”

Becca’s heart dropped. “Let us go, Emerich,” Becca said, her voice hard.

“After all the trouble I went through to bring you here? You made it quicker than I expected, I’ll give you that. But no, I don't think so.”

“Our people know where we are. They’re coming,” Cameron said with steel in his voice.
