Her finger tightened on the trigger.

“What is the endgame?” he asked, trying to keep her talking. “Why go after us? Does he want us all dead? For what possible reason?”

“He wants Becca. That’s all he’s ever wanted, and you and her sisters are keeping her from him.”

“So he’s killing us all so she can’t love anyone else? And you’re okay with that?”

She stared at him for a long minute. Then gestured with her gun. “Run, Cameron. And do yourself a favor—don’t ever come back. Because the next time I see you, you’ll be dead.”

She didn’t need to tell him twice. He turned and ran, hoping she wasn’t prolonging the game.

Until he heard her laugh.

Yep, the game wasn’t up yet.

Chapter23

Becca bounced against the hard bed of the truck as they drove down the unpaved road. They had only been driving out of the compound for about fifteen minutes when the truck pulled to a stop. She clutched Cameron’s pack to her middle, wondering if they’d seen her.

She braced herself for the sound of the truck door opening, but instead, the truck did a U-turn. They were taking her back to the compound! Becca’s heart plummeted. She couldn’t go back there.

She got up onto her knees, and as quickly as she could, she flung herself over the side of the truck and rolled down the grassy embankment. She lay flat on her back in the bottom of a ditch, trying to catch her breath and listening for the truck to stop and come back.

It didn’t. She flipped onto her stomach, got to her knees, and scurried up the embankment. Nope, the truck was still going. They hadn’t seen her. She kept low and ran into the woods away from the road, running parallel to it so she wouldn’t get lost.

They hadn’t made it far, but at least they had been going in the same direction as the river and the cave. In fact, they were following the same tracks she and Kyle had followed the day before. She had just passed the cave when she heard the first gunshot.

Cameron!

She started running as fast as she could, praying she could find Marcie before she killed him. He couldn’t die, not now that she finally knew how much she loved him.

Running at full speed, she hit the meadow where they’d seen the elk, but no one was there. Another shot sounded. It was close. She continued toward the sound, toward the voices—Marcie’s and Cameron’s. She had to reach them.

She rushed through a grove of trees, heading toward the voices, when she heard another shot. Her heart cried out. Marcie was standing in front of her, bending over a boulder, lining up her shot.

No, she wouldn’t!

Becca ran into her at full speed, throwing herself onto Marcie and banging Marcie’s head as hard as she could into the gun and rock below her.

“Cameron,” Becca screamed as she rolled off Marcie. She straightened, and as she did, Marcie fell off the boulder and hit the ground, blood gushing from her shattered nose.

“Becca!” Cameron was running toward her.

Becca couldn’t believe she found him. Leaving Marcie, she ran toward him and they collided into each other’s arms, holding each other tight.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, cupping her face, clearly unable to believe she was actually there.

“I saw Marcie leaving the compound with her rifle. I couldn’t let her kill you.” She looked over at Marcie who was still out cold on the ground.

“I’d say you did a pretty good job stopping her.”

Becca grinned. “That will teach her to try and kill my man.”

He laughed. “Your man, huh?”

“You bet.”

“Come on, let’s get her gun before she wakes up.” Even as he said the words, Marcie let loose a groan, her hand coming to her face as she tried to staunch the blood flow.
