“What the hell did you do to my nose?” she cried in outrage.

“Only what you deserve.” Becca grabbed Marcie’s pack and opened it, dumping its contents on the ground. “Oh, look, a satellite phone.”

Cameron, who already had her gun hanging on his shoulder, took the phone and called Kyle to come pick them up. “Yep, we got Marcie. There will be three of us.”

“Emerich will never let you get away with this,” Marcie said through gritted teeth.

“Maybe not, but that will be a fight for another day.” Cameron turned to Becca. “Is there anything in that pack we can bind her wrists and gag her with.”

Becca dug through the contents on the ground. “Yep, look at this. A paracord.”

“Great.” He took it from her and tied up Marcie’s wrists. “We better get moving. That phone has a GPS locator on it. I told Kyle to meet up in the meadow next to the river. He has Genie with him.” He grabbed Marcie by her arm and yanked her to her feet.

“Good.” Becca took the phone, opened the back, and pulled the battery pack out. “Hopefully that will buy us a little time.”

“A little time is all we need. I still can’t believe you’re here,” he said with a smile. “It’s so nice to have the team together, working in lockstep. No matter what Emerich tried to throw at us.” He pushed Marcie forward in front of them, then put his arm around Becca as they walked.

“I agree,” Becca said. “As you said, we are safer together. I wasn’t about to let anything happen to you.” She reached up and kissed him again, still unable to believe she found him. “Just remember, when I set out to do something, I usually succeed. Keep that in mind, Marcie.”

She gave the woman a push forward as they headed to the spot where they were meeting Kyle. “We are stronger together than we are apart, and you are no longer one of us.”

Marcie grunted. “I don’t need to be on your team. I’m on Emerich’s, and when he gets here, there isn’t enough teamwork in the world that will save the two of you.”

“She might be right,” Cameron said. “Let’s just hope Kyle gets here before Emerich’s men.”

Marcie laughed. “I wouldn’t count on that.”

Chapter24

Cameron couldn’t take his eyes off Becca as she and Marcie walked toward the clearing to meet Kyle and Genie. Becca was right. They’d succeeded in bringing Marcie home and getting all of them out of Emerich’s compound alive. Even if Marcie was so under Emerich’s spell she was willing to kill them all.

How had Emerich gotten that kind of power over these women? The answer had to be in the drug cocktails he’d been feeding them. If they got the chance, they had to get their hands on those drugs, analyze them, and find a way to stop him from using them on anyone else.

As they walked through the meadow, the sound of Jeeps approaching filled the air.

“Told you,” Marcie gloated.

Becca stopped and looked back at him. “What now?”

He looked around them. They were standing in the middle of the meadow with nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. “Run for the trees.”

They started running, pushing Marcie in front of them back toward the trees, but she slowed them down every chance she got, and they barely made it inside the tree line when the Jeeps were on them. Shots rang through the trees, peppering the ground around them.

“You can stop right there,” Emerich said, annoyance in his voice.

They stopped and turned to face him.

He got out of the Jeep and was pointing his pistol at them. The men in the Jeeps also got out, all of them holding AR-15s.

“We had a deal,” Emerich said to her and pointed his pistol at Cameron.

Cameron didn’t doubt that Emerich would shoot him right where he stood.

“Yes, we did.” Becca took a step forward. “You said, if I stayed with you that you would let Cameron go. What you didn’t say was that you were sending Marcie after him to kill him.”

“Because I didn’t.” His voice was cold, steady.

“And yet, here she is with her rifle.” Becca gestured toward Marcie. “I saw her leaving from the roof and followed her. Are you telling me you didn’t order her to kill Cameron?”
