Page 6 of Becca's Trouble

Becca sat back down beside him, trying not to notice how nice he smelled or how she could swear he kept looking at her out of the corner of his eye. Maybe Marcie was right? Maybe there was something between them after all. Or maybe Marcie put that thought in her head and she was imagining things.

Before she could think about it further, she felt something again. A tingling at the back of her neck. It wasn’t the first time that week. At first, she’d brushed it off, but she wasn’t brushing it off any longer. She looked up, searching for the drone she’d heard earlier. She glanced at Genie. If anyone was feeling what she was, it would be her, but she was too busy making googly-eyes at her husband.

Becca reached across the table and took Genie’s hand, then looked her in the eyes. Their abilities increased whenever they touched each other; this time was no different. Surprised, Genie turned to her, the smile disappearing from her face. She squeezed Becca’s hand as their gazes searched the woods around the house.

Someone was watching them.

Chapter2

Cameron watched Becca’s furtive glances around the woods and the way she was grasping Genie’s hand. Something was up. He glanced at Kyle and noticed the quiet speculation in his eyes while also watching the sisters. Good, they were on the same page.

The girls released hands but didn’t say anything. Becca was quieter than her usual snarky self and her skin was flushed. He told himself they would share when they were ready, though it took all his willpower not to ask. He’d learned over the last two years of working with the Marsters girls that it was best to let them come to him when they were ready.

He tore his gaze away from them and fiddled with the file folder in front of him. “Okay, I’ve gone through the list of names from Jayne’s aunt of kids that were patients at the lab run by Jayne’s father and cross-referenced them from the list we had already compiled. From our initial investigation, the kids have grown up and most are living normal lives with no outward signs of any apparent abilities.”

“That’s good,” Jayne said. “Any signs of depression or mental illness in any of them? Drugs sometimes mask the symptoms.”

He remembered Jayne’s aunt kept her drugged for years, trying to mask her abilities. If anyone knew how disrupting it would be to find out as an adult you have abilities that have been kept secret from you your whole life, it was Jayne. But she was doing much better now that she knew the truth. He held on to that whenever doubts about what they were doing surfaced.

“So far so good. Depending on how long they were in the program or what cocktails of drugs they were given, both played a huge factor. Some of them appeared to have abilities as children, but no longer do. According to the files, others never presented.”

“What about Emerich?” Genie asked. “Do you have a location on him?”

She glanced at Becca. Cameron got a distinct impression that something was going on they weren’t sharing.

“We’ve been trying to track him and some of the people we know work with him, to see if there is anyone in particular he is interested in. My new research assistant, Dana, who is a wiz on the computers has narrowed it down to five people he could have his eyes on.”

“Five,” Marcie repeated, biting her lip.

“Yes, he responded.”

“Okay, tell me what you have?” Becca sounded anxious and kept glancing at the house.

He no longer had the patience to wait for someone to tell him what was going on. “Is everything all right?”

Becca picked up another cupcake and took a large bite. “Everything is fine.”

Genie frowned at her. “Becca has a stalker. He’s been leaving her creepy gifts.” She held up her bandaged hand.

Cameron’s eyes narrowed. “What’s this?”

“It’s nothing.” Becca insisted, glaring at her sister.

Cameron couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “It is something. It means someone is here on the island and watching you.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s Emerich,” Becca insisted, her voice hard.

Genie grinned and looked at her sideways. “I never said it was, but you’ve been thinking about it.”

Concern dropped heavily in Cameron’s stomach. That was why Becca kept looking in the woods beyond the yard. “Is someone watching us now?”

He studied the estate’s backyard. An aggregate patio surrounded a beautiful pool. Behind it, a long grassy area sloped down to the ocean. Where the water met the rocky shore there was a dock and a boathouse with a ski boat parked inside.

The estate was completely private except for the woods lining the far side of the grass and the Sound surrounding the point of the island. In the thick trees, anything or anyone could be watching them.

Becca’s gaze followed his along the tree line. “I saw a wolf on my run this morning is all.”

“A wolf.” His eyes met hers and for a second and he thought he saw a glimmer of fear.
