Page 7 of Becca's Trouble

“A lone wolf. He ran away when I yelled at him.”

“Smart wolf,” Genie said. Kyle nodded in agreement.

Cameron frowned. “Maybe so, but you should take your gun with you when you go running.”

“Or get a running buddy,” Marcie said with a grin.

Jayne agreed, nodding, as she picked up the tray of cupcakes, the leftover muffins and Danishes and took them inside. Chet grabbed the rest of the items and followed her. They were nervous by their furtive glances around the yard.

Cameron didn’t blame them.

“Okay, enough about me. Let’s get back to your file,” Becca insisted, looking at the papers in front of him.

Cameron could see she was growing more uncomfortable by the moment. As she should, since he knew she wasn’t telling him everything. He didn’t have to be psychic to read Becca; her emotions were clear on her face.

He started once Jayne and Chet returned to the table. “The first name on the list is Debi Meyers,” Cameron said. “And whether she knows it or not, she needs our help.”

He opened the file folder and spread the pictures of Debi in front of them. “As luck would have it, she’s working in Portland. It will be really easy to swoop in, talk to her, and hopefully convince her to come with us.”

“What is her ability?” Marcie asked, studying the pictures.

“We’re not sure, but she’s a math wiz. Likes to visit Vegas every eight weeks or so. Hits a different casino each time and wins big, but not so big that she calls attention to herself.”

Genie shrugged. “Okay, lots of people are good at math.”

“True. She’s been in the foster system most of her life. Her mother put her in the program when she was young, but after the program shut down, her mother abandoned her. Not having any family, Debi went into the system. Her mother fell on hard times, abused drugs, and died of an overdose.”

“Tragic,” Jayne said.

Genie nodded her agreement. “She probably isn’t going to be very trusting.”

“We’ll definitely have our work cut out for us,” Becca said. “The thing is, her being so isolated and on her own is exactly the type of target Emerich goes after. I’d say her background places her at the top of the list.”

“Then we have to go get her and bring her into the team now. We are all stronger together than alone.” Marcie’s gaze met Becca’s and held it.

Again, Cameron got the feeling he was missing something. How many secrets were these women keeping? “Okay, we need a plan.”

“I don’t think we should all go in. Too many of us might spook her,” Genie said.

“How about just us girls,” Marcie said. “We can make a girls’ weekend out of it. Celebrate your birthdays.”

“That sounds like fun,” Genie said.

“Becca? What do you think?” Marcie asked as Becca stared into the woods.

Becca turned to them. “Someone is watching us.”

“Are you sure?” Cameron asked, getting to his feet.

“Yes.” She looked at Genie and stood, reaching out her hand.

Also standing, Genie took it. Both women bowed their heads and concentrated. “There. On the water,” Genie said, looking toward the boathouse.

Kyle started running that way.

“Chet, you and Jayne check the house and the security systems,” Cameron said and started running after Kyle toward the boathouse. They saw a fishing boat on the water, but it looked harmless enough, though something shiny glinted in the sunlight.

A shot cracked the air.
