She sighs some more, but she gives me everything I’ve asked for.

When I say goodbye, I do it with a heavy heart.

I don’t think I want my mother in my life anymore.

I don’t think Icanhave her in it anymore.

I don’t think she’s good for me.

“Come here.” Jameson’s deep voice cuts through all my thoughts and feelings from the other side of the bed.

I look at him. “No.”

His eyes darken. “Come here.”

“No, I’m not in the mood.” I’m really not, and I’m unsure why he thinks I would be.

“Adeline.”

I wipe the tears that are still falling down my cheeks. “Are you kidding right now? You’ve witnessed everything I’ve gone through tonight and you think you can fuck me and make it all better?” I push the bed covers off angrily and leave the bed to go into the bathroom to wash my face.

I’ve just splashed water on my cheeks when Jameson fills the doorway.

I glance at him. “Go back to bed. I don’t want to talk to you.”

“I’m more than okay with that,” he growls, coming to me. “But I’m not okay with you sleeping on your side of the bed by yourself when you’ve just had your heart ripped out.”

He flicks the tap off, dries my face, lifts me into his arms, carries me to his side of the bed, lies me down next to him, wraps his arms around me, and orders, “Go to sleep.”

The man spoons me.

Spoons.

And I let him.

I also let him steal another sliver of my heart.

I sleep like a baby.

For many, many hours.

My mind finally decides it’s time to give in, to stop keeping my thoughts churning every second of the day and night, and allows me to rest.

I also think having Jameson wrap me in his arms helps.

I wake just before 9:00 a.m., which is a sleep-in like I haven’t seen since my early teen years.

Jameson is in his office when I get up. I find him in there after looking in the kitchen for him.

“You’re awake,” he says, looking up from his desk when he hears me.

I eye the reports spread out in front of him. “You look busy.”

He nods. “I’ve got a lot to get through before we fly to Vegas.”

I frown. “Why are we flying to Vegas? And when?”
