“Someone has to, Adeline, and since you’re not thinking straight, it has to be me.”

I stare at him angrily. “God, I think I’d almost forgotten what an asshole you can be. Thank you for the reminder.”

“I’m not being an asshole. I’m being practical.”

“No! You’re being an asshole. Trust me on that.”

“Fuck.” He pushes out a long breath. “I’m not spending the night going around in fucking circles with you on this. I don’t have the time to fly back and forth between London to keep up appearances for Bill. And you don’t either. End of story.”

“You know what, Jameson? I hate the ends of your stories. You can take that one and stick it somewhere very special. I’m not paying any attention to it.”

“Youwillpay attention to it,” he says like he’s telling me another fucking end of story.

“No, I won’t.”

He’s silent for a moment and I watch the storm clouds roll in. Finally, he says, “We have a contract. I suggest you re-read it. You’ll find it clearly states why you can’t move to London.”

With that, he stalks out of the bedroom.

I stare after him, my heart beating wildly.

I’m angry.

I’m furious.

I’m enraged.

But most of all—worst of all—my heart is in shreds. Torn apart by the man I should never have allowed to take even one tiny sliver.

He doesn’t feel anything for me.

He only cares about our contract.

Jameson claimed my mouth, my body, my soul.

He could keep my heart if he wanted it, but since he doesn’t, my heart gets lost and confused and bewildered, and doesn’t know what to do or where to go.

She and I have a come-to-Jesus moment.

I sit her down and have a big talk with her.

I tell her how things are going to work from here on out.

I tell her that she must never allow pieces to be stolen again.

I tell her to buckle in because she and I are about to cause a commotion.

One that Jameson is not going to like.

“Today?”Vanessa says early the next morning when I call her with instructions for what I need from her this morning. “You can’t be serious. You’ve got a full day of meetings. And then a full week of more of the same. Not to mention red carpet appearances and parties to attend. You can’t cancel everything and fly to London.”

“I can, and I am. And you’re going to switch all those meetings to Zoom meetings and rearrange my calendar to make this work.” I take a deep breath and exhale it. “I’m moving to London today, Ness. It’s happening.”

She takes that in, turning silent for a long moment before finally saying, “Okay, so I’m presuming you’re taking Jameson’s jet.”

“No. You’ll need to book me a flight. And a hotel.”
