More silence. “Doesn’t he own hotels all over the place that you could stay in?”

“Please book me the hotel I normally stay in. I’ve got some things to do at home before I come in. I should be in by lunchtime. Put a few hours aside this afternoon for us to go over how this is going to work. And please book me a car to take me from the office to the airport.”

She connects the dots that neither Jameson nor his driver will be taking me to the airport. “Right, so it’s just you flying to London and you’re getting to the airport by yourself. Correct?”

“Correct. I’ll also need security while I’m at the airport and in London.”

“I imagine you do,” she says, also putting it together that Jameson’s security won’t be with me. Then, softly, she asks, “Is everything okay, Adeline?”

I steel myself.

Tighten my armor.

“Everything is exactly how it should be. Let me know if you have any problems with any of this.”

She agrees to do that, and we end the call.

I glance around Jameson’s bedroom, taking in the suit jacket he dropped on the armchair last night, his shoes that he didn’t put away, and my packed bags that are sitting on the bed.

I told him I had a meeting away from the office this morning. That I wasn’t driving into work with him because of that meeting. He didn’t question this, and after he left, I packed my bags.

I’m going to London whether he likes it or not.

We’ll figure out how to make the marriage work once I’m there.

I can’t not do this.

My company and my heart are depending on me.

With one last glance at the bedroom, I leave it to go into my office and pack my things up in there, ignoring the pain slicing down my chest. Soon, that pain will ease, and I’ll be able to get on with my life and put Jameson behind me.

“What do you mean she went away?” I say to Jeff when I arrive home at 10:00 p.m. After his daily update, he asked me when I’m expecting Adeline home from her trip. Apparently, she didn’t tell him when that would be. Considering I wasn’t aware she was going away, I don’t have an answer for him.

His brows pull together. “She left around lunchtime. I gathered from the number of bags she took that she will be gone for a while.”

“A while?”

“Yes, Sir. Perhaps a couple of weeks.” He appears to be uncomfortable with this conversation, but since he’s the only person with the information I need, I continue questioning him.

“And she didn’t say where she was going?”

“No.”

Fuck.

We argued last night, but I didn’t expect this. I didn’t expect her to walk out. Because that’s what my gut’s telling me she’s done. She’s left me.

“Thank you, Jeff,” I say before putting my phone to my ear to call her.

She doesn’t answer any of the three calls I make.

I leave messages for her to call me and then I call Trent, the head of my security.

With each passing second, my chest is feeling tighter. My anger is building.
