“That makes me think you’re maybe not going to pay any attention to it, though.”

He smiles. “I like the speed with which you catch onto things, Charlize.”

I try to send him a death stare. “You won’t like the speed with which I inflict bodily harm if you continue waking me up at this time.”

The way he’s still smiling makes me think I failed at my death stare. “All I’m hearing is that you still intend on using me for sex for a year, and that’s all I’m interested in.” He checks his phone at the sound of a message and then eyes me again. “How do you feel about having coffee with me this morning?”

My eyes widen. “What, now?”

“No, later. Seven thirty at the coffee shop around the corner from my office?”

Usually, I’d say no because me being even close to presentable at that time for a coffee date isn’t something I’d usually be. For Owen, though, I’m beginning to think I’d run there to have that date with him.

Jesus.

Did he put drugs in the sex we had?

“You’re buying,” I say.

He stands. “I’ll see you then.”

I try to go back to sleep after he leaves.

Half an hour later, I give up and stomp out to the kitchen in search of coffee.

Dylan’s sitting at the kitchen island, halfway through a coffee. “There she is,” he says. “The girl who kept me up half the fucking night.”

“Well, it’s only fair. I mean, the number of nights you’ve kept me awake over the years is well intoI can’t count it on two hands anymore.” I locate a mug. “What time did you get home? I didn’t hear you come in.”

He lifts a brow. “Yeah, because you were making enough noise to not hear anything. It was around one.”

I roll my eyes. “Calm down. I’m not that loud during sex.”

That draws a laugh from him. “Record yourself next time, Char. You fucking are. And so is that bed. If you guys put a hole in my wall, you’re paying for it.”

He’s right, the bed did hit the wall a few times. Owen doesn’t know what quiet, sedate sex is. I’m not complaining even though I’ve discovered muscles I didn’t know I have.

I make coffee and sit on the stool next to him.

“So, what’s on the list for today?” he asks. “You’re finished with that job, right?”

“Yes. I’m hopeful I’ll get a good reference from it so more work will come in. Today, I plan on seeing what’s new to apply for and then I thought I might get a haircut.”

“Didn’t you just get one last week?”

“I appreciate that you are not like other boys, Dylan Hale, and actually remember things about me, but you can stop now, okay? So I wanna get another haircut?” I shrug. “I’m a girl. That’s what girls do. We get lots of haircuts.”

He shakes his head at me again, with that look of his that says he really doesn’t understand me half the time. “I like that you’re giving him a chance. I’ve heard good things about him.”

“When? How?”

“You forget how many people I know in this city, babe. They only say good things about Owen.”

Dylan does know a lot of people. He comes from an influential family with connections everywhere.

I gently nudge my shoulder against his. “You love me, Dyl.”

“You somehow convinced me to.”
