“That’s my specialty in life, convincing boys to like me. But you’re the one who stayed, and you’re the one who looks out for me. Thank you.” I take a sip of my drink. “Owen and I have a coffee date this morning.”

“Good.”

I give him one last smile before going to get ready for my date. “I’ll try to be quiet next time. And I’ll tell him not to put a hole in your wall.”

“Or maybe you can just fuck him at his place.”

“Yeah, maybe, but where would the fun be in that?”

I laugh as he shakes his head at me again.

Friends really are the family we give ourselves.

* * *

I weara black leather-look pencil skirt, a white tee that saysBut First Coffee, and white sneakers when I meet Owen for coffee. His eyes are all over theBut First Coffeethe minute he spots me. Or maybe it’s my breasts that catch his attention. My T-shirt does hug them.

In return, my eyes are all over his dark blue suit. Yesterday, I told him jeans were my preference. Today, I’m not so sure. This suit is something else. Or maybe it’s the body that I know is under it.

He’s waiting outside the coffee shop for me in the sun. When I reach him, his arm comes around me easily and his lips meet mine without hesitation. I like that we don’t have to keep our hands to ourselves anymore.

“Hey,” I say.

He kisses me again before brushing his mouth against my ear so I can hear him over the crowded shop. “What do you want me to order for you?”

I ask for a cappuccino and an almond croissant, and while he orders, I find us a table.

It’s busy this morning so it takes almost ten minutes for Owen to come back to me. My phone sounds with a text as I spot him coming my way. I quickly check the message in case it’s my employment agency letting me know I have a job to go to. I brought a change of clothes with me in case.

I read the text twice.

And then I read it again.

I seriously don’t know what I did to the Universe today, but she’s not happy with me over something.

When Owen moves the chair from across the table to sit next to me and stretches his arm across the back of my seat before leaning in to kiss me, I place a hand to his chest and stop him. “You might not want to do that.”

He allows me to stop him, but he stays right where he is. “You are very wrong. This is exactly what I want to do.”

I show him the message on my phone.

NYC Employment: Charlize, Jill North has asked for you again today. The job has turned into a three-week contract. Can you confirm with me in the next ten minutes that you can do this? And that you can start at eight thirty this morning?

Owen curses but remains where he is. “Are you going to confirm?”

See, clones. They really are the answer to all of life’s dilemmas.

“I don’t know. I have like eight minutes to decide, and trust me when I tell you, this is one of the worst decisions I’ve had to make this year.”

He likes that. Not that he smiles. I mean, I think the only thing that will make Owen smile right now is if I say I’m not going to confirm. However, it’s clear in his eyes that he likes how affected I am by him.

“If you want the work, you should take it,” he says, removing his arm from around me and sitting back.

“I do want the work, but I’m sure there are other jobs out there.” I already miss his arm around me.

“It’s only three weeks. They’ll fly by.”

I drop my gaze to his undone shirt buttons. “Ah, not if you keep walking around with those kinds of buttons, they won’t.”
