He takes a few minutes, reading and flipping through the pages before he stops at one poem and reads out loud. “You bare your soul and hand them the map…love is a dance, a sway, between the comfort of knowing, and the terror of becoming…it’s the silent words in the middle of the night, it’s the wounds that leave their mark…yet, it’s in the jagged edges that the most beautiful love is seen…it’s the ending and the starting….” He meets my gaze. “She captures it so well.”

He didn’t read every line of that poem, but the ones that spoke to him make me sigh every time I read them. “She puts words together that just belong together.”

“Do you have any of her other books?”

“No, just that one. I only want that one.” I stand and move into him, the book between us. “I carry this book almost everywhere I go and I have since the day you gave it to me. I never told you how much your gift meant to me.”

“Yes, you did.” He places the book in my hands. “You just didn’t use words.” He brushes his lips over mine. “I have a meeting.”

I grasp his suit jacket and pull him in close, inhaling his scent before he leaves. “I’ll see you tonight.”

He goes to work and I begin looking for a new job.

Poppy:Kristen, how was the Grant party last night? Seth and I were supposed to attend but he got food poisoning so we had to stay home. I saw so many fit checks on Insta that were a slay.

Adeline: I saw some too that I loved.

Jenna: I heard the Blacks were an hour late.

Me: That was NOT my fault! I’ve been so careful all week not to run late for any of these events.

Jenna: Did Bradford blame you, though? Beckett always finds a way to say it was my fault when we’re late because he couldn’t resist fucking me while I got ready.

Me: No, and if he did, I’d correct him very quickly. I refuse to take the blame when I was actually on time.

Poppy: Was your hair a mess by the time you arrived? Your makeup ruined? Honestly, men need to choose better times to stick their dick in us than when we’ve just done our hair and makeup.

Jessica: IDK Poppy, I’m okay with Jack sticking his dick in me when I’m glammed up. What I’m not here for is when he wants to stick it there after not doing the laundry he promised me he’d do.

Lorelei: Ashton uttering the words “calm down” means he can keep that dick of his away from me for a very long time.

Jenna: Right? How do men not know that calm down means “you’re out of control and an emotional mess right now and you should stop being hysterical”?

Adeline: How did Alan cope with you guys being an hour late, Kristen?

Me: He glared at me all night. I should have told him to calm down. I had to bite my tongue a lot so I didn’t tell him I’d rather sit on Bradford’s dick more than attend a party.

Poppy: Attagirl.

Jenna: I have never heard you say “sit on his dick”. I am here for this.

Me: Trust me, I’m saying all kinds of things this week. My bad girl part is just over here throwing herself a party. I truly hope she takes a long nap on Friday.

Jessica: Why Friday?

Me: I’m meeting Bradford’s mother when she and Edmund come for drinks before the Swift Ball.

Charlize: You’re nervous about that?

Me: Yes! Edmund hasn’t been awful to me but I know he wishes Bradford hadn’t married me. I have no clue what to expect with his mother. And Bradford’s invited his brothers too, but so far, I only know that Hayden is coming. I don’t cope well with not knowing things!

Jenna: You’ll be okay, Kris. Bradford will make sure of it.

Me: I know, but still, I don’t want to cause more stress for him.

Lorelei: Where’s your date tonight?
