I nodded, getting up and walking over to him.

“She doesn’t want to sleep here. She wants to be close to Trigger. How are the boys?”

“Bathed and passed out.”

“What’s going on?” Monk asked, walking into the room.

“Hellraiser.” Kansas muttered, as if that was explanation enough.

“Trigger can stay with her. Officers need to head back to town. Conroy called. He needs to speak with the both of you.”

Looking up at Kansas, I watched his face shut down as he nodded. Gripping his hand, Kansas said nothing as he ushered me out of the room. Back downstairs, I grabbed my leather jacket that I had hanging on a hook near the front door as Kansas talked to the brothers who were staying behind. I hated the idea of leaving, but I was curious why Detective Conroy wanted to speak with me. There was only one reason he would need to and that sent a chill through me.

The ride back to town seemed to fly by as my mind whirled with what Conroy was about to say. As much as I wanted my past with John put to rest, I couldn’t stop the feeling of dread seeping into my bones.

“He tried to kill her!” I shouted angrily, as Kali gripped my hand tightly. When we arrived back at the compound, Conroy was waiting and wasted no time telling us that John Stevens was in the custody of the New York Police department, but our elation was short-lived when we learned, that thanks to a clerical error, the police released him.

“I understand your frustration, Kansas, and the New York Police Department are trying to locate him again, but he’s in the wind.”

“I can’t believe this,” Kali whispered, her body shaking uncontrollably against mine. Holding her close, I glared at the man. “You didn’t make us come back into town just to tell us that. What’s the real reason for this visit?”

“John Stevens is contesting the adoption. He is demanding visitation rights.”

“You can’t be serious,” Pence groaned. “No fucking judge on the planet will allow that bastard near those kids. Not after what he did to Kali.”

Conroy replied, “Until he’s convicted, John Stevens has every right to see his kids.”

“That’s bullshit,” Blackjack mumbled. “Motherfucker shows up here and there won’t be a need for a trial or jury.”

“I didn’t hear you say that, asshole,” Conroy growled. “Look, I’m just telling you what I know. The New York Police detective in charge thinks Stevens may head this way. If he does, Lawton PD will arrest the fucker. We won’t make the same mistake.”

“Do you think he will come here?” Kali asked softly.

Conroy softened. “Honestly, Kali, I don’t know. With what he did to you making national news, there aren’t a lot of places he can hide. He’s running scared right now and when a man like Steven’s gets scared, they make stupid decisions. Deadly ones.”

“Babe, why don’t you go rest in my room for a bit? I want to talk to Conroy alone.”

Kali nodded and left. The second I heard my bedroom door shut, I grabbed the good detective by the collar of his shirt and slammed him against the wall. “What the fuck, Justin? I’ve got mad respect for you, but she didn’t need to hear that shit.”

“She has a right to know, Kansas.”

Monk whispered next to me. “Let him go, Prez. This isn’t his fault.”

Releasing the detective, I seethed, “You think he’s coming here, don’t you?”

Conroy nodded. “If it were me, I would. The cause of all his problems is here. I think he’s coming to finish Kali off. With her out of the way, nothing will stop him from taking his kids and fleeing the country.”

“He can fucking try. Those kids are mine.”

“You don’t get it,” Conroy added. “Even if he’s incarcerated for life, he doesn’t have to give up his parental rights. In fact, in some states, like New York, the courts can order Kali to take the kids to the prison so he can see them.”

“Over my fucking dead body.”

“I’m sorry, Kansas, but those are the laws.”
