All those happy-flirty thoughts were gone now.

Replaced by terror and panic.

And pain.

Riff turned on the cold water. “Put your hand under the water. I’m going to go get some ice.”

“Riff, no,” I said. “What if…”

Riff touched my face. “Hey. You’re the one who never worries about this. Right? Don’t start now.”

“I always worry about it,” I said. “Believe me. This is crazy! What are we doing, Griffin?”

My voice got louder.

My eyes welled up with tears.

“Sweetheart, no offense, but you showed up here,” he said.

“Oh, yeah, this is all my fault.”

“Fiona,” he said in a stern voice.

Chills ran through my body.

I was turned on instantly by his voice.

“Just take a deep breath,” he whispered. “I’ll be right back.”

Riff brushed his lips to mine before leaving the bathroom.

I licked my lips.

Oh, so now we kiss goodbye over everything now? What does that mean?

I kept my hand under the cold water and took deep breaths.

Riff returned with a small container of ice.

He grabbed a white towel and poured ice into the center.

Then he rolled the towel up and shut off the water.

He touched my hand again. “Well, it’s just red right now. If it was blistering or anything, I’d probably have to take you to the hospital just to be safe. Keep ice on it.”

He put the icy towel onto my hand and held it there carefully.

“Hockey player and a doctor,” I smiled.

“Not a doctor. Just common sense.”

“I guess I don’t have that?”

“Not when you’re panicking, Fi.”

“How was I not supposed to panic?”

“I don’t really know how to answer that.”
