The ground erupted with flames too.

I screamed and ran a few steps toward the flames before Remi pulled me back and threw me to the ground.

“I told you!” Remi roared. “I fucking told you! I told you to save the others. You didn’t fucking listen. You could have shown them how to get out. You could have carried others out. You did this, Riff!”

I gasped for a breath. “I saved your fucking life, man.”

“I told you to save the others.”

“Fuck you, Remi,” I said.

Remi turned and looked down at me.

He was hurt. He was angry. He was scared.

We almost died.

The shock running through our bodies was intense.

I reached my right hand up, he grabbed it and helped me up.

In the distance there were sirens.

Next to us, the team bus burned.

We stared at each other.

“I saved you,” I said. “All I wanted to do was save you.”

Remi curled his lip. “You fucked up. Again. You should have saved the others.”

Remi pushed me again.

I fell to the ground.

He walked toward a tree and leaned there.

The rest of it all became a blur.

The sirens. The lights. The first responders.

The intense shock.

I never thought Remi would hate me for saving his life.

“What are you doing with that, Fiona?”

“I have to hide this one. Nobody can see it.”

“Why not?”
