I touched her sides. Felt her body. Stared into her eyes.

Her hands gently touched the cuts and bruises on my face.

She shook her head. “I don’t know what to do, Riff. I don’t know how to fix this.”

“You don’t have to fix a thing,” I whispered. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Tell that to the guilt I feel.”

“We haven’t done a thing wrong,” I said. “We’re two people, Fi. We get to make our own decisions. Nobody forced anything between us.”

“But it’s not… I mean, how is this real? Where does this go? I’m supposed to just hang around here and paint and do what? What am I accomplishing?”

“Who said you have to accomplish anything? You’re living. You’re doing what you want.”

“How is that enough?”

“Is this what he said to you? Did he plant this garbage into your head?”

“No. He barely even talked to me. I just feel so…”

“Fiona. You deserve to be happy.”

“I don’t want to hear that, Riff. I want things to be okay.”

“The only thing okay is what you make of it.”

Fiona pushed at my chest. She jumped off the counter.

She walked out of the kitchen.

“Fi,” I called out.

I went after her.

My hands touched her perfectly curved hips.

I pulled her back against my body.

Just feeling her like that…

Fiona put her head back against my chest.

“We knew this would happen, Riff,” she whispered. “Why did we let it go so far?”

“What? Falling in love? Like that was planned?”

“How long, Riff? How long have we felt this? It wasn’t just now.”

“What does that mean? Do you think the past is clouding our judgement?”

“I don’t know what to think.”

“Yes, you do. So say it, Fi.”

She turned around. “Why can’t you just talk to him? Why does it have to be a war? I don’t get it. We should have never let this happen like this.”

“Do you need to be reminded that you showed up here? I didn’t ask for you to show up, Fi.”
