“You were,” Demi said.

“Fine. We were. Remi saw the drawing. All hell broke loose.”

“Now you’re here.”

“Is that a problem, Demi?”

“Of course not,” she said.

We both went back to painting.

Hers was far better than mine. Not that it was a competition.

I caught myself feeling full as I painted. Feeling too busy.

Demi had focus.

My mind was a clusterfuck.

I finally called it quits on the painting and turned.

“My old job wants me back.”

“Oh?”

“Really bad. Offering me more money than I ever imagined.”

“And?”

“And… what?”

“This is on your mind, Fiona.”

“Demi. I never intended to lose my job.”

“What did you intend?”

“Well, let’s see. The guy I was casually dating at the time decided to propose to me in front of his family. I panicked and climbed out of a window. A bathroom window. In a bar. I’ve told you this before.”

Demi nodded.

She didn’t stop me from repeating myself though.

“I ended up at Riff’s. Now, I told myself it was simple. I needed an escape and Riff was always an escape for me. Anytime I was in town to visit Remi, I would find a way to see Riff. We’d…you know…”

“Screw like rabbits?” Demi asked.

“Yes. Great sex. No commitment. Just pure fun. This time it blew up in my face.”

“Bound to happen, Fiona. Love can’t hold itself back forever.”

“Love. Was it love all along?”

“I’m sure it was. That’s how it goes.”

“Yeah, well, back to my job. They decide to fire me. Out of nowhere. Now I should have just fought back right then. But I think by being quiet it impressed them. Better yet, they really saw what it was like without me around. Now? They want me back.”

“Did you like the job?”
