“I loved the job. Total opposite from sitting around, painting for fun.”

“So you worked a fast-paced job. You kept yourself busy. Chasing imaginary goals. Money was the ultimate reward. No man could get near you because you thought you were too strong for them. In reality though…”

“Wow, Demi. You’re not holding back.”

“I’m not saying it’s wrong. There is no wrong. That’s what is driving you crazy. You want clear lines, Fiona.” She pointed to my painting. “There are no clear lines. Your paintings are telling you that.”

I stepped back and folded my arms.

“I know,” Demi continued. “It’s a lot to take in. You can have the job back. Make a lot of money. Be a strong, independent woman on your own. You decide everything. You make all the rules. What’s wrong with that? Nothing. Or you can hang around here. Find a different kind of power and peace. Is that wrong? Not at all.”

“So I’m screwed.”

“Hardly. You just need to decide. Forgive me for saying this, Fiona, but you cannot hide here forever.”

“And why not? Are you kicking me out? Have a hot date?”

Demi laughed. “I don’t bring men here. When I need something, I get a hotel room.”

“Demi, am I in the way?”

“No.”

“What would you do if you were me?”

“Well, to be fair, I have money. So if I’m choosing between money and a guy that looks like Riff? That’s an easy choice for me.”

“Why couldn’t it just be about great sex?”

“Because you fell in love with him long before you two began having sex. You just denied and hid it.”

“And my brother being such an asshole?”

Demi shrugged her shoulders. “From what you told me, it seems like they need to work that out.”

“Yeah. They’ll end up killing each other.”

“Can I share a secret?”

“Sure.”

Demi stepped closer to me. “Men are fools. Every single one of them.”

I smiled. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. Complete and total fools. Thank goodness they come equipped with cocks or else there really would be no use for them.”

“You’re a little vicious today, Demi.”

“I guess I am. I’m not sure why.”

“Thank you for everything. I probably haven’t said it at all. Me being stubborn and all. You’ve ignited that passion in me again for painting.”

“It’s always been there, Fiona. I haven’t done a thing.”

“I don’t like this. I don’t like not having clear answers.”

“Nobody does,” she said with a wink.
