I feared the worst for Remi.

“Fuck,” I growled. “Remi! I’m on my way, man!”

As soon as I got to the top of the hill, I found Remi.

Dangling over the side, his right hand holding onto a rock that looked ready to just give up and go for a ride.

I stopped dead in my tracks and burst out laughing.

“Fuck you, Riff!” Remi yelled. “Help me up, man! I hate heights like this. You know that. I don’t want to fall!”

“Why not?” I asked. “You’ll just roll down into some brush. No big deal.”

“Fuck you!” he roared again.

He looked up at me and had desperation in his eyes.

“So now you need me, huh?” I asked.

“Riff…”

I dropped to my knees.

The drop was maybe ten feet. Fifteen at the most.

Not straight down either.

I mean, Remi could get hurt by falling.

There were jagged rocks everywhere.

But it wasn’t some two-hundred-foot plummet.

He’d get dirty and cut up a little.

And damn that would be one hell of a sight.

I took my phone out of my back pocket. “If I record this, we could put this online and make some money.”

Remi showed his teeth to me. “I hate you, Riff. I’ve hated you for so long.”

“For no reason, man,” I said. I reached down and locked my hand to his left forearm. He grabbed my forearm.I didn’t pull.“I would never hurt her. Then, or now. It wasn’t even like that back then either. She just wanted to hang out. I wanted to get to know her.”

“I don’t want to talk about this,” Remi said. “Just pull me up. Before someone sees this.”

“I’m in love with her. You have to know that. You have to hear it. We love each other. We didn’t plan on it. But I think we’ve been in love for a long time.”

Remi opened his mouth but didn’t respond.

He just stared at me.

His right hand pulled on the rock and it suddenly let go.

Remi let out a loud scream and the large rock began to tumble down the hill.

Bouncing, kicking up dirt, smashing smaller rocks, all the way down into the brush.

“So this is it,” I said. “I’m the one who’s saving you again.”
