“You’re that stubborn? You won’t come to your own sister’s wedding?”

“You’re not engaged!” Remi yelled. “You’re not marrying her!”

I walked toward the incline and began to climb. “What is it going to take, Remi? To fix all this? Huh? What do you want me to do?”

“Here’s a plan,” Remi said. “First off, demand a trade. Get the fuck off the team and out of this city. Second, forget you know my sister. Break her heart. She’ll get over it.”

I shook my head. “It’s sad, Remi. Seeing you like this. It’s just pathetic. You’re pathetic.”

“You want me to beat the shit out of you again, don’t you?”

“Maybe I do,” I said. “At least I’m trying to clear the air here.”

Remi’s jaw tightened. “You’re not marrying my sister.”

“You don’t get to decide that.”

“You think so?”

“Oh, I know so, Remi. She can’t resist me. You can’t imagine the things we’ve done together, Remi. And for so long. Year after year. Hiding it. Secrecy.”

Remi twisted his head. Then he smiled.

He cracked his neck and turned away.

“Jeremiah,” I said. “Walking away from a fight. Wow. Never thought I would see a day like this.”

Remi looked back at me again. “Say what you need to, Riff. I’m done. I’m done with it all. There’s nothing you can do about it. Nothing you can say either. I know what’s going to-”

Just like that, Remi disappeared.

He fell down the other side of the hill.

I wasn’tsure how big of a drop it was on the other side or if it went into the road or into the parking lot.

I pictured Remi tumbling head over heels, over and over, all the way down.

Imagining a guy that size rolling down a hill?

That was a little bit funny.

But having him break an arm or leg, or roll into the road and get hit by a car or truck?

That was bad.

Really bad.

I suddenly had flashbacks to the night of both accidents.

The car accident with Fiona. How I wasn’t able to do much. How it happened so fast. How she cried and was hurt. But not too hurt.

But the bus accident…

The sound of it happening.

The metal screeching against the ground.

My feet began to move quick.
