“You have an idea?” Riff asked. “That worries me.”

“No need to get worried,” I said. “This works. It’s a good idea. A great idea.”

Riff took a deep breath. “What’s going on, Fi?”

“How about a drink? I’ll get us something. Um, what do you have to drink?”

I darted toward the kitchen and Riff chased after me.

Before I could reach a cabinet door, his hands grabbed my hips and he picked me up.

I reached with my hands and kicked my feet for a second or two.

Heat flooded my body.

Not from Riff touching me.

It was my crazy idea.

The idea that now felt too crazy.

Okay, new plan!

Skip the drink. Grab your stuff.

And leave!

It’s time to leave!

“Talk to me, Fi,” Riff said. “Right now.”

I stopped moving.

My arms went limp. My legs stopped moving.

Riff put me back on my feet.

“I have an idea, Riff,” I said.

“Let’s hear it.”

I looked back at him.“I think I should stay here… with you… for a little while.”

It tookRiff a second or two to understand what I just said.

“You want to stay here? With me?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I know that kind of goes against things…”

“Kind of?” Riff asked. “Kind of?Fi, that’s a big deal. I mean, you’re talking about staying here. With me. You’re talking about sneaking around like crazy. It’s not hard to do for a day or two. But what are you talking about? Another day? A week? A month?”

“Jeez, way to make me feel like I’m a burden,” I said.

I tried to walk out of the kitchen but Riff put his massive, muscular body in the way.

“Not a chance, Fi,” he said. “Don’t turn into that. You’re not some bitchy woman when you don’t get your way.”

“Did you just call me a bitch?”
