“Have you two…”

“Riff and me? Have we… what?”

“I don’t know, Fiona. Anything?”

I blushed and let out a nervous laugh.

Maggie mouthedoh my God…

“Stop,” I said. “Nothing likethat.”

“You sure?”

“Oh, I’d know. For sure. It’s just… I don’t know what it is. But I want to know. I mean, if he does like me and I like him, then something will work out. It has to work out. Right?”

Maggie did the wholebest-friend-nod-and-smilething.

But we both knew the reality here.

Me? Anywhere near Riff?

It was a dangerous disaster in the making.

RIFF

“He thinkshe can fucking third string me?” I asked. “For who? For Polanin? That guy? Really? Oh, I’m sorry. That’s right. Didn’t Polanin’s old man give Coach a deal on a new car? Are you fucking kidding me right now?”

“Riff, have a drink and calm down.”

Murph handed me the flask and I stared at it for a second. Or two.

“Seriously, this is how it goes,” he said.

“Fuck that.”

“Riff. Listen to me. Polanin will play on the first string for, what, three games? He’ll show who he is. That’s that. You’ll come out on the ice and do your thing.”

“Third string?” I asked. “Really? That’s what this fucking guy wants to do. Look, Murph, I don’t have options here. Okay? I don’t have a big family. I don’t come from money. This is all I’ve got. I can’t be sitting on the third string and expect people to take notice.”

“Riff. Have a drink.”

I brought the flask near my lips and I stopped myself.

No. Can’t do it. You’re meeting up with Fi tonight. You cannot even entertain the idea of sipping booze and then driving. Especially with her in your car.

I handed Murph the flask back.

“Whoa,” he said.

“I gotta go,” I said. “I’m, uh, meeting someone.”

“Mystery person again?”

“No mystery, Murph. Just someone I like hanging out with.”

“Sure thing.”

He smirked at me.
