I laughed. “Why would you ask that?”

“Your face. I know that look.”

“You know that look? Does that mean…”

Ellen lifted a finger and waved it. “Nope. I’m not on your couch, Anna.”

Ellen smiled ear to ear.

“You should respond to him,” Ellen said.

“I think I should get to my hotel room,” I said. “I think I should get myself organized and settled. I’m not sure what to expect.”

“Should be interesting. You know, for some reason, I really want it to work out. For Joe, I mean. I sort of respect anyone who can express themselves like that.”

“Violently.”

“You do what you have to do.”

“Then why did you suspend him?”

“Appearances. League bullshit. If it wasn’t us, then they would have stepped in. I’ll always protect my financial interests first.”

“So you’re okay with what Joe did?”

“Off the record? Sure. Why not? But I would prefer him to pick his battles.”

“Which is what I’m supposed to help him with.”

My phone vibrated again.

“Someone has regrets,” Ellen said.

“Someone is trying to cause trouble,” I said.

I looked at my phone once again.

Can’t even take a second to respond. Ever think for a second this is why I had to do what I did?

“I’ll make sure you get a ride to the hotel,” Ellen said. “You go unpack and unwind a little. Enjoy a hot shower. Be sure to use room service. It’s all paid for. Okay?”

“I appreciate it, Ellen,” I said. “I was actually hoping we’d be talking about more work for me.”

“And there it is,” Ellen said. “Wanting more of my money.”

“I had to give it a shot, right?”

“You’re smooth, Anna. You’re good at your job.”

“Just not good with men,” I said as I grabbed my phone off the table.

That made Ellen laugh.

I thanked her for the drink and left the restaurant to the private car.

When I arrived at the hotel, the first thing I did?

Wonder where Joe’s room was.
