“Yeah. Whatever.”
I walked into the bathroom and slammed the door shut.
I rubbed my jaw.
A few seconds later I heard a gentle knock.
“Joe?”
“I’m taking a piss,” I called back. “Feel free to open the door though. You can come shake it for me when I’m done. Nothing you haven’t seen or touched before, huh?”
I walked to the toilet and flushed it without taking a piss.
I washed my hands even though I didn’t need to.
My jaw felt tighter than ever in my life.
I needed a drink.
I needed to fight someone.
I walked to the bathroom door and ripped it open.
I was not expecting to see Anna standingright there.
My back stiffened and I stood even taller if that were possible.
I stared down at her.
She stared up at me.
“We’re not done,” she said. “The other night when you called me instead of punching those guys. What were you thinking?”
“I was thinking I should call you.”
“Yeah, but go deeper. You had a voice of reason, Joe.”
Outside my hotel room I heard the sound of a vacuum start.
That cloudyvrooming sound.
Back and forth.
Back. And. Forth.
“That’s where you need to look,” Anna said. “You’re able to make your own decisions. That’s the part of this that frustrates me with you.”
“Why? Because you know who I am, right? You know me. It’s not very fair, is it?”
“We both opted for this, Joe.”
“You started it.”
“I ended it.”
“Tried to,” I smirked.
“Right. And here we are. I know you better than anyone else. So why not cut through the shit and just talk to me?”
