Before I placed my phone on my desk, Joe responded.

I shook my head.
Bethany opened my office door.
“Sorry to barge in,” she said. “Five minute warning until Herbert is here. He makes his rounds.”
“How…”
“The pizza guy texted me.”
“What?”
“He’s not married. He’s my age. And he makes pizza.”
“Bethany.”
She pointed at me. “Are you going to tell me who I can and cannot sleep with?”
“Nope. Not at all. Thanks for the warning.”
My phone vibrated in my hands again.
No answer? I guess I’m just showing up then. See you in a little bit.
I could have replied to Joe and told him not to show up.
Or I could have lied and said I wasn’t there.
Instead, I put my phone down and shrugged my shoulders.
Well, I guess I was going to see Joe soon?
Herbert arrived first.
I walked out of my office to find Bethany sort of blocking Herbert’s path.
“There she is,” Herbert said. “The traveling doc!”
“Herbert,” I said. “Is there going to be a day or week where you don’t show up here?”
“It’s my building.”
“I pay my bills,” I said.
“Gray area.”
“What can I do for you?”
“Sign a piece of paper that says you’re going to leave,” he said. “We end this right now. You go. I get to do what I want here. Life goes on.”
“How much are you going to pay me?”
“Is that an option?”
