We were both ready to kick the door down and smush Steven into dog food.
But we both resisted.
“If you came here to attack me, have at it. Again, you’ve got a minute.”
“Anna. Please. I know how to fix this entire thing.”
“How is that?”
“I was wrong. I had problems. I have problems. But you have solutions. How could I not see it? We’re going to get married!”
“What?”
“We’re going to get married! I have a ring for you!”
That was all I could withstand.
I kicked the office door open.
Both Anna and Steven screamed.
Steven even had the nerve to jump behind Anna.
Pushing her toward me.
I slid my right hand around to Anna’s back and pulled her against me.
Without hesitation I lowered my mouth down to hers.
“What the hell is this?” Steven cried out.
I moved Anna behind me.
“She’s mine,” I said.
Steven’s eyes went wide. “I think I know who you are…”
“And I know who you are. You’re the guy about to leave. And you’re going to stay away from her. Or else.”
“Just let me stab this motherfucker,” Bethany said.
“You’re all fucking crazy,” Steven said. “Anna. You need me. You can’t live without me. You’re going to fucking marry me! You have no choice!”
“Your best bet is to shut up and leave,” I said.
“I don’t care how big you are. Or who you think you are. You don’t know a thing!”
“Scissors,” Bethany said. “Letter opener. A knife. A fork even. Just let me take care of this guy.”
“Everyone just stop,” Anna said. “All of you.”
We all fell silent.
Anna looked around.
She had control of the room.
“Listen to me,” she said. “I am not marrying you, Steven. I would never do that. Ever. We shouldn’t have been together. It’s long been over.”
