‘Maybe we can just live here,’ I say to her.
She pops up from the bed of my truck. ‘We’re in the woods, Joe. What are we going to do? Sleep in tents?’
‘Or my truck,’ I say. ‘I’ll build you a cabin. Anything you want. I’ll hunt with my bare hands.’
‘Do you know how to build a cabin?’
‘Sure. Make a square. Like building blocks as a kid.’
‘You are so dumb sometimes, yet it’s so sexy. You’re just worried about losing me. You want to keep me close and safe. To some girls, that’s creepy.’
‘Not to you?’ I ask Anna.
‘Not to me. Only because I want to figure out what’s wrong with your brain.’
Anna giggles.
I reach for her sides and pull her closer to me.
I tickle her.
She lets out a scream.
‘Careful,’ I whisper. ‘You’ll attract animals.’
Her eyes grow wide. ‘Is that true?’
I smile. ‘You know, you like brains that much, you should be a zombie.’
‘I don’t want to eat brains though.’
‘Okay. Then maybe a wolf. That scream you just made… like this…’
I dig my fingers into her sides.
