“I’m done for,” I whispered.
“One thing at a time, Anna.”
We both watched as Steven climbed out of the back of the ambulance.
Shaking hands with the paramedics.
A large, white strip across his nose.
His face all cleaned up.
Dried blood on his shirt.
“I can’t believe I was with him,” I said. “For as long as I was.”
“We all make mistakes. I slept with Herbert.”
“What?” I asked.
“I know. Insanity. It was while you were away. He showed up. I got rid of him. There was a moment on the sidewalk. It was…”
“Did you do it here?”
“No,” Bethany said. “His place. Which is really nice, considering who he is. And when you strip away the clothes and the landlord stuff, he’s a nice guy.”
“Does that mean…?”
“No,” Bethany said. “I asked him to pull my hair and he giggled and was too afraid to.”
“Dealbreaker?”
“Big time. What can I say? I like my hair pulled.”
“That’s a lot to process for me,” I said.
I walked away from Bethany and outside.
Officers Bart and Corey were finishing up talking to Steven.
They approached me and got right to the point.
“We have to process him,” Bart said. “The victim wants to press charges.”
“Fuck,” I said.
By then Corey was getting into the driver’s seat of the large police SUV, ready to take Joe away from me.
Then from the corner of my eye I saw Herbert.
Rubbernecking.
Arms folded.
Staring at me.
“You know what?” I called out to Herbert. “Get the papers together. I’m done with this place. You want me out of here? I’m gone.”
Herbert grinned and clapped his hands together.
