“Don’t make me come down there and pull your hair!” I called out.

Herbert’s face twisted with panic and he stomped away.

“Did you just threaten him?” Bart asked me.

“That was a sexual thing. Want to know the details?”

“No. I don’t.”

Then came the moment where Joe was driven away.

Steven was gone.

The ambulance gone.

Officer Bart eventually left too.

I stood on the sidewalk, alone, even with Bethany next to me.

I felt like the world stared at me, was laughing at me.

I needed no sympathy for my mistakes.

I just didn’t want to lose Joe again for good.

Chapter Forty-One

JOE

A few days went by.

The fanfare continued on social media and third rate sports shows with hosts who looked for any reason to explode like idiots hoping to go viral.

Even when I left the police station, nobody cared.

No reporters.

Nobody taking my picture.

I actually thought maybe it would just blow over.

Naive of me.

I woke up and looked at Anna next to me in my bed.

I touched her bare shoulder.

Part of me knew she was awake but would fake sleeping just to avoid conversation with me.

Which I understood.

There wasn’t a whole lot to be said since we both jumped into a pit of fire and had finally gotten burned.

She had to face her decisions and her career.

I had to face mine.

I reached for my phone.
