The ethical and legal implications felt too heavy.

I had to get out of Joe’s apartment too.

It wasn’t mine. It wasn’t my home.

I didn’t have a home!

And if I didn’t have clients, a practice…

What do I do now?

My stomach did a flip as I left the apartment.

Of all places to end up, I went to my office.

I found Bethany there.

Working like normal.

“Hey,” she said when she saw me. “What are you…”

“Bethany.”

She shrugged her shoulders. “Ever hear the theory of just showing up and acting like things are okay?”

“That’s not the way to handle problems in life.”

“Works for me most of the time.”

I shook my head. “Bethany. Stop working.”

“What do I do then? Just go home?”

“For now? Yes. I’ll pay you for all your hours too. You won’t go without. At least for now. I owe you a big apology.”

“Nope,” Bethany said. “Nope. We are not doing this. You know what? I have something…”

Bethany crouched down and disappeared for a moment.

When she stood back up, she had a bottle of vodka in her hand.

“What…?” I asked.

“Just in case we ever needed it. For a celebration or a bad day. Get two coffee cups from behind you. We’re having a drink.”

“So on top of everything else going on with my career, you want to add drinking in my office to the list?”

“You were fucking a patient,” Bethany said. “Nothing tops that. I don’t think. Unless you’re pregnant by him.”

I stepped back and touched my stomach.

I was not pregnant.

At least I didn’t think I was.

But even if I was… and it was Joe’s baby…

I quickly turned and got two cups for Bethany and me.
