Sweat slicked my skin. It had been a few hours since I came in here, and I felt better. But I was still unsettled. No way in hell was I going to tell Delta I wanted to go back in the cage. Just curl up inside the bars and pretend there wasn’t anything else in the world for a while.

The door opened from the outside, and Silver appeared. Jeans and a dark t-shirt. I loved him like this just as much as I loved his leathers.

“Thought I might find you here.”

“Here I am.”

He shook his head. “Fuck, it smells incredible in here.”

“Because of me?”

“It’s like drowning in blueberry syrup.” He slid down the wall next to me, taking my hand in his and lifting the back to his lips.

I leaned my head on his shoulder, and somehow that turned into me laying across his lap with my face in his chest. “You were looking for me?”

“I was.”

“Is everything okay?”

His hand stroked through my hair. “I hope so, baby girl. But that’s something only you can tell me.”

Inhaling his frosty scent, I snuggled closer. “What do you mean?”

“We disciplined you this morning,” he said roughly. “Delta said you were fine, but I…” It sounded like he swallowed. “I needed to make sure.”

The truth was I hadn’t really thought about it. I hadn’t had time between Delta, Clementine, and losing myself in dancing. “I’m okay.”

He crushed me to his chest, saying nothing.

“I didn’t think it bothered you.”

Lifting me up so I sat between his legs, my back to his chest, Silver wove our fingers together before wrapping our arms around me together. “I’m can’t say I don’t enjoy spanking you. That would be a lie. But I’d rather do it for fun. I hate seeing you struggle.”

I let my head fall back on his shoulder. “I was always going to struggle. My whole life I tried to shove everything fae to the side. Suddenly having everything be about that? It’s like…” I laughed softly. “I imagine it’s a little like finding out you’re a shifter out of nowhere, andneedingto change forms like you’ve been doing it forever.”

“If you were a shifter, and I were your Alpha, I’d be able to help you,” he whispered into my hair. “I’d be able to force your shift and make you understand how it feels. None of us know what this feels like for you.”

“I just—” I wilted in his arms. “I hate it. Not that I’m with you, or that I have to be fae. But all of this happening because of me. I’m the reason Clementine got the shit beat out of her. I’m the reason the clubhouse is damaged. I’m the reason people have to leave their homes so they don’tdie. And there’s nothing I can do to change it unless I find a way to turn back time and not be born.”

Silver growled. “Don’t say that, baby girl.”

“It’s true though, isn’t it? People are going to die because of me. People are hurt. Kramer’s dead.”

“Kramer was a piece of shit who thought of you as a payday.”

“I know.” My breath hitched. “I’m not sad he’s gone. But it’s still my fault.”

“Come here,” he said gently, turning me so I faced him, straddling his lap. “I know it feels like this is your fault.”

“Itis.”

Lifting my hands, he placed them on his shoulders. “Listen. It is easy to feel that way. But just like I told you that you being here was always going to happen? This thing with the Legion was always going to happen. Fang hates me and all the Shadows. He thinks I killed his father.”

“What? Why?”

“Because that’s what he was told. I can deny it until he’s dead and buried, but he believes it was me.” Silver smirked. “You think he’d know that if I killed his father, I wouldn’t have a problem telling him to his face.”

I reached up and sank my fingers into his hair. Touching him like this felt like a luxury.
