“Leo, get your love something to drink while I get to know her some.”

I looked over to catch him slowly shaking his head with a smile.

“So Leo barely told me anything about you. Although I have to give him credit. At least I knew you existed, unlike how Noah shares information.”

“I said I’m sorry.”

“You, sir, will never be forgiven for leaving me out of such important information.”

“Just wait until she finds out how you two met,” Leo said, bumping into his brother just hard enough to annoy him. I gasped as Noah turned on him, holding the carving knife he had in his hand to his neck.

“Noah Rand, you put that knife down now!” Ayden’s voice carried through the kitchen as Leo’s laughter erupted and Anita just shook her head.

“I really like that one,” she whispered to me as she pointed at Ayden. “I love my boy, but he’s crazy. She may be the only person other than me he listens to.”

Noah dropped the knife into the sink and reached for Ayden, pulling her to his body and kissing her until her stiff, angry body finally softened to his.

“And you were worried mom wouldn’t like you,” Leo said as he placed a glass of wine in front of me.

“Come on, everyone, let’s eat.”

The oversized kitchen table was already set, and we made our way to our seats. Leo’s mom insisted she sit across from me and we weren’t five minutes into dinner before I realized why.

“So, it’s only right for me to ask. I mean, I am Leo’s mother and all. What are your intentions with my son?”

Noah laughed so hard he spit food onto his plate and Leo dropped his head into his hands. I looked over at Ayden for help, but she was too busy cleaning up the mess Noah made to realize it.

“Um… well, I love your son, ma’am. I’m pretty sure he loves me too, so… so I guess that’s it for now.”

“I see.”

The table got quiet and then, without warning, Anita’s laughter started bubbling out of her. “Oh I’m sorry, Talia. This is just all too much fun. Please forgive an old lady who is up to no good. Did Leo tell you he’s never brought a girl home before? Never once. Not in high school or college. Definitely not as a young adult. It appears I have no idea how to act and I can only hope you won’t hate me before tonight is over.”

I smiled and reached for her hand. “Ma’am, I have no idea how to act either. Let’s just pretend like we’ve known each other for most of our lives and go from there.”

Her smile was contagious and before I knew it, the three of us women were busy exchanging hilarious stories about Leo and Noah. My sides hurt from so much laughter. The food was amazing, and it turned out the company was even better.

“So we have an announcement,” Noah said as soon as dessert was finished.

“We do?” Ayden asked, looking up at him as he stood at his spot at the end of the table.

“We’re getting married.”

The table erupted in congratulations, but I couldn’t miss the look of confusion on Ayden’s face as we all made our way over to hug the both of them and congratulate them. When I pulled her to me, I whispered into her ear.

“Did you know you were engaged?”

“Nope,” she said with a laugh, shaking her head, “But this is pretty par for the course with Noah.”

We said our goodbyes with promises of seeing each other soon, and before I knew it, I was stripping out of my clothes and climbing into bed with the most amazing human I had ever met.

“How did I get so lucky?”

“You? I think I’m the lucky one here. You met my family, didn’t you?”

“They are kind of amazing.”

“Sometimes they can be. I’m pretty much convinced Ayden had no idea Noah was going to announce their engagement tonight.”
