“Uh-huh. Sure did. And like I told you before—we’re not interested in selling the land. I don’t want a bunch of tourists tromping all over our beach. Sorry.” I shove a hand in my pocket, locking eyes with her. She stands taller, flipping her hair over her shoulder, then rests her elbows on the wooden counter and leans in toward me. Close enough that I catch the scent of her coconut sunscreen mixed with some sort of citrusy perfume.

“Listen, Levi. My parents and I are prepared to up our offer. What’s it going to take to make you reconsider?” She bats her long lashes at me and I work hard to stay unaffected.

“There isn’t a number, Lark. I don’t want a hotel next door. Period.” I fold my arms over my chest and stand firm.

“It’s an inn, not a hotel. And c’mon. Be reasonable. Everyone has a number.” She tilts her head to the side, and her hot gaze has me ruffled.

“Nope. I don’t. So forget it.”

Lark narrows her eyes at me, but doesn’t break, and it feels like we stare at each other forever. Finally, she huffs out a breath and stands.

“You’re ridiculous, Levi Banks, you know that? This could be a great deal for you and you can’t even see it because you’re such a stubborn mule.”

“Oh. Such sweet nothings you whisper, Lark.” I smirk, and she rolls her eyes.

“You’re so annoying.”

“Oh, baby. You have no idea how annoying I can be.”

“Ugh. I’ll change your mind, you’ll see.”

“Can’t be done, sweetheart. But happy New Year anyway.” I wink at her just to piss her off and she spins and flounces out the door, the screen door slamming behind her.

Good riddance.

Because it’ll be a cold day in Candy Cane Key before I sell the land next door. To her or anyone else for that matter.

I have plans for that land and they do not include a boutique inn or hotel or anything of the sort.

And they certainly don’t include Lark Meadows and her ocean-blue eyes.
