“Yeah, totally fine,” I say. I turn around but my foot gives out underneath me.Shit, I better not break another bone tonight.

Zayn’s hands grab hold of my waist. “Easy there.”

I blow out a breath. “It hurts.”

“What hurts?” he asks. “Your foot?”

“Mhmm,” I say nodding my head. “I think it’s the same one with the fracture.”

He looks around the bar still holding onto me. “Let’s get you back on the stool for now. I’ll check it out.”

I nod as he guides me back down onto the stool.

“Cool with you if I take off your shoe?” he asks.

“Sure.” I watch as he removes it and inspects my foot. One of his fingers grazes the arch of my foot and I let out a giggle.

His eyebrows raise as he looks at me. “Ticklish?”

“Yeah, a little,” I say.

“Well, looks like you’re good, but I do think we should head out of here and take it easy. You’ve had a lot of adventures for one night, cowgirl.” He winks and smiles at me.

“On the house,” the bartender interrupts and sets down another lemon drop.

I hesitate but reach for it anyway. I lift it into the air. “Painkiller, right?”

Zayn’s about to snatch it from me, but it’s too late. I down it with one big gulp. A tingle spreads throughout my body.

“That’s probably the last thing you needed.”

“It’s fiiine,” I wave off his comment.

His face grows stern. “Seriously, Autumn. I think we should head out now.”

“Why are you worry—err worried about meee?” My words begin to slur. “Wait, wait, wait, mister! I…you owe me an expl—explanation. Damn it, you know what I mean. Is Riley’s mom Sam or not?”

“Yes, she is,” he says.

I blink several times with wide eyes, fighting the tears that are begging to escape. “So, is that why you stayed here? For Sam?”

“Absolutely not. It only happened because I was so broken and fucked up from my choice to stay here. It was honestly just a moment of weakness since I couldn’t handle that I’d let you go.”

The words spew like vomit. “ButSam? It just doesn’t add up for me. Ugh. So grosssss.”

“I get it, Autumn. I really do. We’ll talk about it one day when you’re not drunk. But, if there’s one thing I can reassure you, I did not cheat on you or stay here for Sam. I never wanted anyone else. You were it for me.”

Hearing those words, my eyes can’t help but to fall to his lips. My body slowly starts to lean in. I’m dying to kiss him. Sirens blare in my mind. No, no, no, Autumn. Do not do this! You’re drunk!

He gets closer to me.Wait—do I want this to happen? What am I afraid of?He is only a couple inches from my lips, when suddenly, it hits me. I stand with urgency, and my hand flies across my mouth.

I race over and grab hold of a nearby trash can. People surrounding the area realize what’s happening and flock to the other side of the bar. There are a few people lingering around laughing about it, and a couple of others who are way too drunk to care.

When my hands release the trashcan, I lift my head to see the bartender pouring me a fresh cup of water.

“You might want to take it easy there, young lady,” he offers, setting the glass of water next to me. He looks to Zayn and says, “You’re driving her, right?”

“Oh yes, sir. For sure. I’ll make sure she gets home safely. Thanks,” Zayn replies as he starts to slowly rub my back.
