“Nah, it’ll be a quick walk, and I’ve got my wallet,” he says patting the pocket of his jeans. My eyes quickly shift from the pocket to the bulge next to it. I can’t help but wonder if the bulge is always there or if . . .

“Come on,” he says, grabbing my hand again. The electricity that jolts through me feels dangerous yet comforting.

We start walking down the street, both attempting to hide our highs from one another. He keeps sneaking glances at me. Of course, I only know this because I’m doing the same thing to him.

“So, how do you feel about tacos?” Zayn asks me, breaking the silence and shared stares.

“I love them,” I say. “I’m so glad we’re eating. I’m freaking starving.”

“That’s perfect,” he says as he leads the way across the street. I’m focusing on his butt in those jeans when he finally stops abruptly in front of me. “Hope you’re ready for the best tacos of your life.”

My eyes fall to the hideous truck with a sombrero on it. “Pedro’s Tacos?” I read the words off the side of the truck. “You’ve got to me kidding. We’re eating tacos from a food truck. That sounds to me like a recipe for instant diarrhea.”

Zayn shakes his head and releases a chuckle. “Even high as a kite, you’re gonna be feisty, huh?”

“It’s not being feisty if I’m simply speaking the truth,” I say matter-of-factly. A puppy-dog look flashes across his face as his eyes widen. “Oh dammit, don’t give me that adorable look. You look like the cat fromShrek.”

“Adorable, eh?” he teases. “Look, all you gotta do is at least take one bite, so you can officially say you’ve had food from a food truck. If you hate it, you don’t have it to eat it and I’ll order take out from somewhere else. Deal?”

I cross my arms dramatically for a moment. “It is on the list, at least. And I’m definitely feeling a slight buzz, so maybe this is the best time to try it. Plus, I’m starving. I bet anything will taste good right about now.”

Zayn walks up to the truck and orders for us. It’s nice being with someone who’s a lot more down to earth. Not that I’mwithhim. Even when I’m high, I’m not crazy enough to fall for someone again. Yet here I am, crazy enough to eat tacos from a food truck. I shrug.Guess it can’t be any worse than Taco Bell, right? This is for you, Summer. I miss you.

I’m pulled from my thoughts when Zayn walks back to me with two paper baskets of tacos. “These are for you,” he says, handing me one. With his free hand, he motions to a bench near the sidewalk.

Once we both take a seat, I watch him take a bite first.

“Don’t tell me you’re backing out of this now, are you?” he asks.

“Nope. Well, maybe. I’m waiting to see if you get sick or die first,” I tease.

Zayn smirks before saying, “There’s that drama queen I know so well, making her appearance. I’ve been wondering where she went. You’ve been quiet lately.”

I elbow him playfully in his side and he lunges forward, dropping the taco in his hand. Zayn and I both stare down at the splattered taco on the sidewalk. My eyes shift back up at him to witness the disappointment washing over his face. “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!”

“It’s all right,” he says, acting nonchalant. “I’ll get a new one in a bit. But first, you should make it up to me. Eat one of yours!”

“Fine, fine,” I say, picking up one of the tacos as he watches me on the edge of my seat. I take a bite slowly, trying not to show emotion. With each crunch of the taco, I taste an avalanche of flavor. The seasoning is hands-down the best I’ve ever had. I close my eyes to savor the taste.

Zayn gasps. “You like it, don’t you? I see the truth all over your face,” he exclaims.

I hesitate to answer in my reluctance to prove him right. I hold out my pointer finger to signal I need to finish the bite. He scoffs.

“All right, fine. You caught me. It’s delicious,” I admit, taking another bite.

“I knew it!” He says as a smile spreads across his face as he watches me take another bite.

In between bites, I ask, “You’re not going to sit and watch me eat all night, right?”

He chuckles. “Nah, sorry. I’m just so excited that you’re enjoying them. It’s nice to see you so happy.” He pauses before adding, “I’m gonna go grab myself another one. Want anything?”

I shake my head and focus on enjoying every bite of the taco until my phone vibrates my entire back pocket. Shifting to the side, careful not to spill the rest of my tacos, I pull it out. I see Liam’s name flash across the screen, but this time it’s a phone call.Shit.

Iset the plate down next to me on the bench and my eyes find Zayn at the truck. I gesture to him that I have a phone call. He gives me a nod to take the call. I swipe my thumb across to answer.

“Hello?”

I hear Liam’s quick sigh. “Hey, Autumn. It’s Liam.” My eyes roll at the obvious, but I decide it’s best not to say anything snarky like I usually would.
