“Nope. Just a slight change of plan. You need to see Rex this morning. He has a different job in mind.”

Oh, goddess. The idea of working as Hayley’s assistant was fine. I’ve met her before, and we get along. I know she’ll be nice to me and I’ve basically done that job already for Dean. Plus, Kim will be there to help with anything new, not that I’m overly keen to become besties with her. But now…

“Doing what?” I ask suspiciously. Does Rex want me to work with him instead?

“Not sure. He just said that he wants you to work more closely with the wolves from your pack.”

That makes sense, I suppose. It’s probably Dean’s idea. However, I’m not sure the reality of me working on a building site with lots of men will make him any happier. Hard hats and steel-toed boots aren’t really my thing. Even though I’m naturally stronger than any human male, I don’t know if I’ll be any good at it. I could try, I suppose.

Leah points me in the right direction, and I find the Alpha’s office quickly, peering in through the open door at a grumpy-looking Rex.

“Do you want me to come back?” I ask quietly. Rex spins around and curses, looking harassed behind a mountain of papers and a phone that flashes silently on his desk.

“No, come in, come in.” He smiles at me warmly and my heart sinks. Rex rarely seems to smile, except at Leah. Now I know for certain this isn’t good.

His expression gives nothing away, and the knot in my stomach grows. I'm getting more and more nervous with each passing second. He offers me a seat, but I shake my head and stay on my feet. He's buying time, stalling, reluctant to tell me what he has in store for me.

“I wanted to talk to you about the work you’ll be doing here. Instead of working with Hayley, I have a more interesting role in mind.”

Rex's attention goes to the door behind me. The hairs stand up on the back of my neck as I hear the graceful cadence of Nathan’s footsteps approaching. Oh, no. My entire body lights up just from him being nearby. I've never been so aware of my reaction to someone in my life. I ignore Nathan’s arrival as best I can and keep my focus on Rex.

“And what is that?” I ask, but it's not Rex who answers. It's Nathan.

“You’re coming to work for me.”

CHAPTER 11

MAYA

“Absolutely no way.”

I shake my head vehemently, first at Nathan and then at Rex, who's supposed to be calling the shots. I have a sneaking suspicion this was not his idea. Nathan’s smile slips for a second at my negative reaction, but he recovers quickly.

He breezes past me, looking painfully handsome, and the closeness of his broad shoulders as he brushes past sends my senses haywire. Just being in the confines of this office with him is making me feel hot and flustered, and I can feel my palms sweat. It takes all my willpower not to squirm under his intense gaze.

“You didn’t even ask what the job is,” he points out, his tone light and teasing. I watch him with suspicion as he rests against the edge of the large wooden desk, arms folded across his muscular chest in a way that makes his biceps bulge.

He’s awfully chipper for someone I kicked out of bed last night, literally, and it’s grating on my nerves.

“I don’t need to know what it is to know that it’s not a good idea.”

Rex says nothing, just glances back and forth between us as we stare each other down.

“Maya, I think we need to have a chat,” Nathan says calmly, and it’s not the reaction I was expecting from him this morning. Rage maybe, or some sort of over-the-top display of possessiveness. Even for him to act like a bit of a dick, his pride hurt after being shot down. Not this.

“You’re right. We do.”

We both turn to Rex, and Nathan tips his head toward the open door. Rex rolls his eyes and sighs in annoyance before striding over to it, stopping with his fingers wrapped around the door handle to complain.

“That’s okay. I’ll leave MY OFFICE. It’s not like I have a million things to do or anything.”

He continues to mutter to himself as he slips out and closes the door firmly behind him, leaving Nathan and me to talk. Alone.

Nathan doesn’t move, just continues to watch me carefully from his perch on the edge of Rex’s desk. He comes across as all smiles and friendly banter most of the time, but I get the impression he misses nothing. He’s watching my every move like a hawk and it’s making the urge to fidget even harder to fight.

“Listen…”

“I just wanted…”
