“Shit,” I hissed, scooting away from the ledge. There was a massive cracking sound, and I didn’t have time to move any further away before the chunk of rock I was sitting on broke off the cliff.

A scream cut through my lungs as I plunged off the side of the volcano—and grew louder when I felt an intense yank on my shoulder.

Then I realized I wasn’t falling anymore.

Dangling off the ledge wasn’t any less terrifying, but if I’d been able to think logically in that moment, I would’ve realized it was much better than falling.

My gaze jerked upward and met the glowing eyes of the crazy-hot dude I’d kissed. With a hard tug, he lifted me. Sharp rocks cut my mostly-bare skin as I was pulled up, my thin, worn-out sleep tank and shorts doing pretty much nothing to protect me. A few strands of my waist-length, chocolate-colored hair caught on the cliff, and I cried out in pain as they were ripped from my head.

The hot guy paused, staring down at me.

“Don’t stop,” I yelled up at him.

He resumed pulling me up.

My bare feet finally met the blissfully-sharp stone that made up the cliff. When I stumbled, I managed to catch myself on the gigantic guy’s chest.

He stared at me, unblinking, with those freaky glowing eyes. The ground was still rumbling below us, and the smoke coming out of the top of the volcano was growing thicker and hotter.

In other words, I needed to get the hell out of there.

Fast.

“You can get us out of here, right? When your eyes weren’t glowing, you said you could. So get us out of here,” I told him, my voice a mixture of panicked, insane, and demanding.

He didn’t even blink.

Not one fucking blink.

Shit, I was screwed.

Even the sharp rocks beneath my feet were starting to heat up, which didn’t feel like a good omen in any way.

“Come on, we’re going.” I grabbed the guy’s hand and tugged him behind me as I hurried toward what looked like an absolutely shitty hiking trail. My feet hurt with every step, and I was leaving bloody footprints after a minute or two, but I didn’t stop. The volcano was still shaking, and the smoke was growing so thick that I couldn’t see a damn thing.

Which also didn’t seem like a good omen.

I wished I’d taken a class about natural disasters instead of signing up for all those damned art classes.

Suddenly, the volcano’s shaking grew much, much more violent.

I knew that was it.

The volcano was erupting.

When he was sane, the massive guy had told me so himself.

And we weren’t even almost close to escaping it.

There was no longer a purpose to running; it wasn’t going to save our lives.

I stopped abruptly, grabbing his ridiculously large bicep and using it to steady myself as I looked up at him desperately. “Save us,” I pleaded.

He only stared, his eyes glowing with what I had to assume was the magic that he’d said was going to take control of him. And even though he was standing upright, he didn’t really seem conscious.

Which made me think he was telling the truth about losing control.

There wasn’t time for thinking, though.
