I dominated her tongue, enjoying the fact she was in my arms and safe, even as myriad ugly thoughts slammed into my brain. I didn’t like not being in control of everything, including her. That would end tonight. She would learn that my rules took precedence over everything else.

The thought forced my cock to twitch. When I broke the kiss, she took several shallow breaths.

“I wouldn’t have left the club,” she said in a whispered voice.

I lifted my head, my muscles remaining stiff. “What if you’d had no other choice?”

Her mouth twisted in frustration. “I’m sorry. Your think my father is involved in this group you mentioned. Don’t you?”

“I do because he made a deal with Davidson.”

“A deal? So I’d represent him?”

I backed away, breaking the connection. “If what the asshole told me is the truth, for your hand in marriage.”

She was stunned, blinking several times. “That’s crazy.”

“You obviously haven’t paid much attention to the way mafia families handle forming alliances through the years.”

“This isn’t the mafia.”

“Like hell it isn’t. I don’t know for certain but imagine with the kind of power they hold what they do to keep it, the rules they can bend.”

“The loose ends they get rid of.”

“Maybe. Or maybe one of their own went rogue.”

“Marriage. My father always treated me as a possession. I won’t do it.”

“Don’t worry, my sweet bird. You won’t need to.”

“What does that mean?”

“That means I explained it to Davidson in no uncertain terms. I doubt he’ll bother you again.”

She seemed surprised then half laughed. “You went to see him.”

Why was her tone as accusatory as I’d heard before?

“I did because it was necessary. No one touches what belongs to me.”

The words hung in the air, her sweet doe eyes the kind that would haunt me for days. What the hell was I doing claiming her like a Neanderthal?

Lark exhaled, as if she’d been holding her breath for several minutes. “You mean that.”

“Yeah, sweetheart, I do.” I watched as she pressed her fingers across her lips, momentarily closing her eyes. Then she smiled, more for herself than for my benefit. Goddamn it, I was losing my mind thinking that we could be together indefinitely. But the brutal beast inside of me remained just under the surface. I couldn’t lose her. Images her of voluptuous body flashed in my mind until she made the next statement, yanking me to reality.

“I think he was following me the other day.” Her voice was clear but full of trepidation.

“When?” The same rush of anger swept through me all over again. Her own father had placed her in the crosshairs of a dangerous game.

“When I went to my apartment. He was watching me.”

I bristled, fisting my hand. “Damn it, Lark. Stay away from him. It looks like I’ll need to have a conversation with your father.”

“Don’t do that. He’ll make your life a living hell.”

“Baby. You really do underestimate me.” She wasn’t as surprised about her father as I thought she’d be. “It’s my job to protect you.”
