“Aren’t you going to stay for the movie?” I ask, but I can already tell what the answer is.

He gives me a sympathetic look that I know he doesn’t really mean. “Can’t. I have homework,” he tells us before he goes to wash his plate, the sound of his footsteps rushing up the stairs following soon after.

“Is that what the kids are calling girls these days?” Jared asks, an amused smile on his face.

“You think it’s a girl?” I ask, my eyes widening as I lean closer to Jared over the table.

He gives a little shrug, but I can tell by the look on his face that it’s exactly what he thinks.

By the time we have the dinner table cleared up, I’m ready to settle down and watch a movie. I snuggle up next to Jared, who has Tyson on his lap again, and we try to find something child appropriate for us all to watch.

We settle on an animated children’s movie, earning a cheer of glee from Tyson, though I believe he would have done it no matter what movie we put on.

However, his excitement is short lived. He only makes it through about half the movie before his soft, steady breaths indicate that he is fast asleep.

Quietly, I reach to grab the remote, turning the TV off.

“Looks like someone is ready for bed,” I whisper with a smile, standing up from the couch.

Jared lifts Tyson up into his arms, and we tiptoe to his room. Only recently, we switched Tyson from a crib to a toddler sized bed. I had cried as we tried to set the bed up, thinking about how big our son is getting.

Jared gently sets Tyson on his bed, and we watch him a moment to make sure he doesn’t wake up. He wiggles around, but ultimately settles back into his dream.

The two of us make a quiet escape from his room, leaving the door open a crack in case he comes looking for us later.

“Now that the kids are fed and the little one is asleep…” Jared trails off as he bends down to scoop me up into his arms.

I let out a squeal, quickly covering my mouth, so I don’t wake up Tyson.

Looking into my eyes as I rest in his arms, Jared lets a mischievous smile grow on his face as he asks, “Why don’t we finish what we started earlier?”

“Lead the way,” I say, gesturing in the direction of our bedroom.

And, unsurprisingly, he makes good on his word.

The End
