When I turn back to Tyson, his mouth is drawn into a thin line and his hands are stuffed deep into his pockets. There is a bruise blooming high on his cheek but it’s the only injury I see.

He sighs and looks at the plane. “Ready?”

I nod and swallow the lump that’s threatening to choke me. I don’t know what comes after I leave my family behind. I’m going on the run with an FBI agent, and both of us are wanted people.

“Ready,” I say, because I’m as ready as I can be knowing that we’ll be lucky if we make it out of this alive.

TYSON

Aria is looking at the bedroom in the back of the plane like she is seconds away from falling into it. The pilot is doing the checks on the plane while the co-pilot settles into the cockpit. We are completely alone in the cabin main area.

“This is going to be something else,” she says, lowering her hood and taking her hat off.

She tosses the hat onto one of the couches before sitting down in a recliner. Aria closes her eyes, leaning back and sighing.

“How long until takeoff?” she asks, opening her eyes long enough to buckle up before she closes her eyes again.

“Only a few more minutes. The pilot needs to finish his checks and then we have to be cleared by the tower for take-off.

She nods, frowning as she opens her eyes and reaches for the television remote. Aria scrolls through the list of movies before settling on one.

I don’t bother to argue with her choice – even though I hate rom-coms – because I need to start thinking about the logistics of our running away.

Taking off is a bad idea but staying is even worse. If we stay, we will die.

The only thing I can’t figure out is who I am more worried about killing us: her father or the FBI.

While the FBI won’t kill us directly, they will find a way to get rid of us. I have no idea what happened there, I tried reaching out to Carmichael, but he wouldn’t take my calls.

I do know how they operate, though. We’ll keep being pushed into dangerous situations until we’re no longer their problem. They won’t want to have to clean up the mess of an agent and an asset going rogue together.

Then there is the problem of Antonio Russo. I’m pretty sure he was the one who made our papers disappear. He is also looking for us and he willnothesitate to kill us. Especially not after having escaped him yet again.

However, I stand by my word, and FBI agent or not, I vowed to protect Aria, so I’ll do that until the end.

Hiding in Italy may not be the best decision, but the last place he will expect to find us is where he is.

I sit down on the couch, moving her hat to the side. Aria glances at me, her eyelids drooping lower and lower. She doesn’t have long before she falls asleep. I can feel exhaustion overwhelming me as well but I fight to stay awake.

The FBI will only keep us alive for as long as it benefits them.

Her father will kill us on sight.

Neither of them are interested in our survival long-term.

Aria focuses on the movie as the pilot boards the plane and shuts the door. He nods to her once before heading to the cockpit. As soon as the door is closed behind him, I buckle up and kick off my shoes.

This is going to be a long flight. I want to be as comfortable as possible.

The plane starts moving, rolling out of the hangar and down the tarmac. It starts to move faster as it rolls down the runway. Within a few more moments, the plane is tilting upward and we are leaving the city behind.

Aria shifts in her seat and takes out a gun, setting it on a table beside her as the plane levels out. The seatbelt light turns off and she grins.

“I’m going for a nap,” she says as she removes her seatbelt and gets up. “You look like you could use one too.”

“I’m fine for now,” I say, taking off my seatbelt and sprawling across the couch. “You go have a nap.”
