His hand wraps around my bicep, pulling me back as a loud explosion comes from behind me. I scream as Tyson tackles me, covering my body with his. Heat flashes and my ears start ringing.

My chest clenches tight as Tyson gets off me. He reaches down and pulls me to my feet. There is blood dripping down his face.

I look behind him, at the pile of flaming wreckage where a plane once stood. My screams grow louder as I stare at the flames. There were people still on board. The pilots and two flight attendants.

Tyson waves his hand in front of my face. I look at him, seeing his mouth moving but not hearing any sound. The ringing in my ears grows louder and my head starts to spin.

I need to sit for a minute.

Tyson is still saying something as I lower myself to the ground and clutch my knees to my chest.

“The baby,” I whisper. I look up at Tyson, tears filling my eyes. “Is the baby okay?”

His face pales as he drops to his knees beside me. Tyson runs his hands along my body but I don’t know what he’s looking for. I’m fine. The baby might not be.

The faint sound of sirens joins the ringing in my ears.

I look down at my stomach, seeing blood start to pool on my shirt. As I lift my shirt, I see a cut along the side of my ribs.

“Tyson.”

“I know,” he says, cupping my face with his hands. “Everything is going to be alright. The paramedics are here and we’re going to go to the hospital to get you looked at.”

“I’m scared.”

His eyes are shining as he looks down at me. Blood still drips down his face. “I know, Aria. It’s going to be okay.”

After an endlessly longnight spent in the hospital, I know that my baby is alright. I stare at the perfect little image on the ultrasound screen, listening as the doctor talks about all the things I have to do. I know I’m never going to remember it all, but Tyson is sitting in the chair across the room and holding several pamphlets.

The doctor leaves after a few more minutes, and I turn to look at Tyson.

Before I can say anything to him, the door slams shut. I jump, groaning when the cut in my side protests, and look at my oldest brother.

“What the hell is going on here?” Damien asks, his tone low and deadly as he looks between the two of us. “I got you out of the family estate, so what do you do? You nearly get yourselves blown up.”

“Damien,” I say, trying to interrupt his tirade as he turns on Tyson.

“And you! I trusted you to keep her safe. Does that mean nothing to you?”

He stops and turns to look at me. I prepare myself for the verbal lashing I know is coming. Instead, Damien freezes and his eyes cut toward the ultrasound screen.

“What the fuck did you two idiots do?”

TYSON

“You two are the dumbest fucking people I’ve ever met,” Damien says as he turns off the highway and onto a dirt road.

We’ve only been out of the hospital for a few hours and I’ve been told I’m stupid no less than a hundred times.

He glances at Aria in the mirror before cutting his gaze to me. “The dumbest.”

Aria snores softly in the backseat. I twist in my seat, smiling slightly when I see her dark hair falling into her face. I know that she is upset that I still can’t trust her, but my suspicion comes from a good place.

There aren’t many people in my life that I’ve been able to trust.
