If I was going to start trusting anybody new, it would be her.

“You know what, I don’t even know if I should be bringing you here,” Damien says as he drives faster down the winding road. Clouds of dirt fly around the sides of the car. “You two idiots will probably get the place blown up.”

“You know I am a highly trained agent, right? It’s not like I saw a bomb on a plane and thoughtyou know what, let me hop right on that.Especially not with my baby near the bomb.”

“What about my sister?” Damien asks as he parks the car. “You give a shit about the baby but do you give a shit about my sister?”

“Of course,” I say without hesitation.

I care about Aria. Hell, I care about her too much. I’m giving up everything to keep her safe. There is no way that the FBI is going to take me turning my back on them lightly. If I don’t go to jail when this is finally over, I’ll consider myself lucky.

“You say that,” Damien says. “But I don’t know that you do. I see the way my sister looks at you. She loves you, even if she hasn’t told you yet. She might never tell you, honestly. It’s not the way we were raised.”

“That’s a lot to get from just a look.”

We get out of the car and Damien rounds the hood to stand beside me. I open the back door and reach in, unbuckling Aria and pulling her into my arms. She continues to snore as I hold her.

“I know my sister. If you love her, you’re going to have to be the one to tell her. She will not say it first. She doesn’t know that she’s allowed to.”

I don’t say anything else as I follow Damien inside the safe house. From the outside, it looks like a normal cabin. Once we get inside, there are dozens of places for weapons to hide.

Damien stands by the door as I carry Aria into the living room and set her down on the plush couch. She groans, burying herself in the cushions. A small smile spreads across my face as I pull down a thick cream-colored blanket and cover her with it.

“Are you going to tell me that you don’t love my sister after that?” Damien asks, nodding to Aria as I walk back into the hallway.

“I’m going to tell you that I’ll do whatever it takes to keep your sister and my baby safe. That’s going to have to be good enough. If it isn’t, tell me, and I’ll leave now.”

Damien’s lips press together in a thin line before he nods. “The walls have weapons hidden inside them.”

I rap my knuckle on the wood panel walls, listening carefully. Hollow. With a grin, I pull aside one of the panels and see pistols hanging on the wall.

“This house is well stocked.”

Damien nods and leads the way into the kitchen. It looks like the kitchen was last renovated in the seventies. There are horrific greens and yellows everywhere with dark wood veneer on the table and cupboards.

“This is quite the place,” I say as I sit down at the little table. “Does your father know about it?”

“No,” Damien says as he opens the fridge and takes out two bottles of beer. He pops the tops off and hands one to me. “I would prefer if it stays that way. I have a lot of secrets I’m keeping and that gets harder to do if you’re making yourselves known.”

“I’m not planning on drawing his attention.”

Damien takes a long drink of his beer before sitting down across from me. “You and I are going to bring Antonio Russo to his knees.”

My eyebrows raise as I study him. It’s the last thing that I was expecting to hear. Though I know Damien wants control of the Russo Mafia, I didn’t think that he would be willing to work together.

If anyone finds out, they’ll kill him on sight. Even after his father is gone.

“My father is arrogant. He believes there’s nobody who could outwit him. He thinks that as long as people are under his control and see him as being smart and in charge, then there’s nothing they can do to stop him.”

“What do you propose we do?”

Damien sighs and takes another sip of his beer. “He seeks control over Aria more than the rest of us. He is pissed that you took her. She is the crown jewel in his collection of people he’s controlling.”

“I’m not going to use her as bait.”

“We might get to the point where we have no other choice.”

My stomach lurches. I know he’s right. I might have to use her and our baby as bait if I ever want to take down Antonio.
