I should run. Hide. Lock myself away until he forgets about me.

I really should. If I were smarter.

However, I’m not smart and Salvatore Russo is the embodiment of temptation.

“You might think that I’m some innocent little girl, but I’ve seen more than my fair of shit. Whatever you think you can or will do to scare me isn’t going to work.”

The corner of his mouth twitches. I’ve poked the bear. There’s no turning back or backing down now.

“Alright, you want to play with the darker side of this world? Let’s go. Leave the camera behind.”

“I’m not leaving the camera.”

He steps closer to me, forcing me back against one of the exterior walls of the cabin. His body is pressed against mine. Electricity races through my body and heat floods to my core. Salvatore’s gaze connects with mine. He is unblinking as he stands there, waiting for me to flinch.

“What?” I ask, my voice breathy.

“Leave the camera here and come with me. You want to dance with the devil, you need to step into the fire.”

His voice sends a shiver down my spine. Salvatore takes the camera from my hand and turns to put it inside the cabin. As he closes the cabin door, he is still far too close to me for my liking.

“Time to burn,” he says, taking my hand and pulling me off the boat.

That small contact is enough to make me feel like I’m losing all control.

He pulls me to a sleek silver truck with a cover on the bed. Salvatore only drops my hand when we reach the tailgate.

When he drops the tailgate, I see the white bricks stacked neatly inside.

I’m in over my head.

But I have to admit that there is something exciting about that.

For the first time in many years, the rest of the world and the threats against me start to fade away. In that moment, there is nothing but Salvatore looking at me like he is ready to set the world ablaze.

And I’m with him, ready to fan those flames into an inferno.

“Get in the truck,” he says as he shuts the tailgate.

I glance at him for a moment, getting lost in those dark eyes. Salvatore arches an eyebrow and I hurry to the passenger side.

When he gets in, he starts the engine and turns on the stereo. “Put on something to listen to. It’s going to be a long drive.”

I connect my phone to the car and pick something I know he is going to hate. He groans as country music starts blasting through the truck. His fingers grip the wheel until his knuckles turn white as he drives away from the marina.

“This music is awful. How the hell can hundreds of people write thousands of songs and all of them are about girls, trucks, and beer?”

I roll my eyes and gesture at the stereo. “This one is about killing a woman’s husband. I thought murder would be fitting for an outing with you.”

Salvatore chuckles and looks over at me. “You’re going to have to try harder if your goal is to annoy me. My sister-in-law is one of the most annoying people I’ve ever met and you’ve got nothing on her.”

“You have a sister-in-law?”

“Nope,” he says, reaching over to turn the music up louder. “This is not sharing hour.”

“You’re the one who offered the information.”

“And now I’m un-offering it.” He glances over at me and shakes his head. “It’s bad enough that you usually have that camera hanging around your neck. What are you even doing with that?”
