“I post pictures online. Sell the prints.”

He hums and drums his fingers on the wheel. “That sounds like you have the potential to get me into a lot of trouble. Especially when you’re just a child.”

“I’m twenty-three. That’s not a child. And don’t worry.” I look out the window as we leave the town behind and head onto the highway. “You’re not interesting enough for me to take pictures of. Your old age is a little off-putting.”

Salvatore scoffs. “I’m thirty-four.”

“That’s pretty old.”

“You always have an answer for everything, don’t you?”

I shrug, the corner of my mouth twitching as I try to smother a smile. “Maybe.”

He nods and turns the music down. “Why photography?”

“I want to be an investigative photographer.”

Salvatore pulls the truck up to a warehouse district just out of town. There are high barbed wire fences that surround several warehouses. The gates open with a creak, clanging against the fence as they are pulled out of the way.

“You’re going to sit in the truck and be quiet. If things go wrong, I don’t want you in my way.”

“That almost sounded sweet,” I say, keeping my voice low as we drive through the gates and down one of the roads.

Salvatore stops at the loading bay of one of the warehouses in the back. He reverses to the door before hopping out. I watch through the mirrors as he meets with someone and unloads the bricks.

My heart is hammering in my chest. Though Brennan has taken me on runs before, he would kill me if he knew that I was out here with Salvatore.

After a few minutes, Salvatore gets back in the truck and tosses a small duffel bag into the back. There is a heavy thud as the bag lands against the seat.

“Now, you and I need to go have a little chat about your career choice,” Salvatore says as he starts the truck.

I should have known that coming with him would be a mistake.

He doesn’t say much as the music plays, and I don’t bother to ask him any questions. I pull my phone out of my pocket and send Brennan a message, telling him that Salvatore invited me out.

If nothing else, at least he will know who I was last seen with.

Salvatore parks the truck and gets out, waiting at the front of the vehicle for me. I take a deep breath and tuck my phone back in my pocket.

“Come on.” He leads the way up a path that disappears into a line of trees.

I follow after him, my heart hammering against my chest.

When he eventually stops, he is standing in front of a waterfall. There is a picnic table to one side and a thick wooden railing that surrounds the lake the waterfall spills into.

I lean against the railing, taking in the view. After a moment, Salvatore clears his throat. I turn to face him but I regret my choice instantly.

His hand wraps around my throat — not choking me but applying enough pressure to let me know he could if he wanted to.

However, what is meant to be threatening does nothing but turn me on. Especially when his gaze drops to my mouth. When he looks back up at me, there is heat burning in his eyes.

“You’re not going to take pictures of me, understood? I don’t want your camera pointed at my property and I sure as hell don’t want you poking around in my business.”

“Then why did you bring me out here?”

“Easier to get rid of the body this way.” He chuckles, his grip on my neck tightening slightly. “But that would complicate things with Brennan at a time when I really do need his help.”

His husky tone sends a shiver down my spine. I stare up at him, wondering if he knows I want him. Just once. Enough to get him out of my system and move on with my life.
