He was happy with that, as he wasn’t so sure how he’d be at fulfilling anyone’s expectations.

“Behave, both of you,” Heather said to her brothers when they arrived on Friday.

She’d taken half a day. Just gone in to get some work done and was out by noon and home cleaning the house. She knew her mother would go through it looking for dust like she had the last time she was here.

Thankfully, Daisy was neater than her and had cleaned up any bunnies hiding in corners before her parents could arrive. She’d said enough times how judgmental her mother could be.

“I want to meet this guy before Mom and Dad,” Gavin said.

Her brothers arrived first. “Where are Mom and Dad?” she asked.

“They left an hour after us. Maybe two. Dad had a few things to take care of first. Then I think they were going to the hotel. We came straight here,” Gavin said.

“We are hungry too,” Noah said. “Do you have anything to eat? We missed lunch since we were on the road.”

She’d barely gotten home when they knocked on the door. “I do have sandwich meat if you want to help yourself...”

Her brothers were both gone before she could say another word.

She moved into the kitchen. “So,” Gavin said as he was making a sandwich. “Luke? Where is he?”

“He’s home right now,” she said. “He’ll meet us out for dinner tonight.”

“Nope,” Noah said. “Call him over here now before Mom arrives.”

She didn’t like where this was going. “Why?” she asked with her hands on her hips. “And he could be busy.”

“I want to form my own opinion with Mom not around,” Gavin said.

“What is going on?” she asked.

“Don’t worry about it,” Noah said.

“I’m not doing anything if you two don’t tell me something.”

Heather watched as her brothers looked at each other. “Mom is all worked up. For some reason she thought you’d come back home at some point. Now she is worried you’re serious about Luke and you’re clouded over the fact he saved you and nothing else. He wouldn’t give up his state job here. No way. So she’s bent.”

“First off,” she said, “we are nowhere near any conversations like that.”

How dare her mother do this to her? At least her brothers were having an open mind though.

“I get it. But since Mom is so worked up, I’ve got to think there is more to it that she isn’t saying. Are you in love with this guy? You know we have to meet men first and we didn’t get to. No reason to do any digging into him. I’m sure his record is clean so we just want to meet the guy and see the two of you together without Mom working you up.”

She started to laugh. There was no way to avoid it. “Mom always works me up. She does the same to you guys too.”

“That’s right,” Noah said. “Which is why we wanted to meet him first. We’ll let you do the same when we find a woman someday.”

“I doubt that,” she said. She picked her phone up because the truth was, she liked the fact her brothers were acting this way.

“I’ll promise to do it,” Gavin said. “If Noah does. And you get your man over here.”

Noah nodded his head yes. “I’m not sure he’s my man.”

“Please,” Gavin said, looking around her kitchen. “Where are your chips?”
