“In the pantry,” she said. She sent Luke a quick text to see what he was doing before she asked him to come now.

He’d said not much and she explained what was going on and he said he’d be over in fifteen minutes.

“Do you have any beer?” Noah asked.

“No,” she said. “Soda or water. I don’t always have beer in the house. You’ll have to wait until dinner tonight. Luke will be here in fifteen minutes or so.”

“See. He knows what is good for him. That alone says a lot,” Gavin said.

“What does it say?” she asked.

“That he wants to make you happy,” Noah said.

“He could have been busy and then you’d think poorly of him for not coming,” she said. “So that makes no sense.”

“But you said he wasn’t busy and was coming. So yeah, smart man.”

“If you say so,” she said. “But if you ask me, I think you’re both being sexist. And I can’t wait to meet the women you bring home now because you just promised and I’m holding you to it.”

Luke didn’t know what to make of Heather asking him to come earlier, that her brothers wanted to meet him first, but since she asked and he wasn’t doing much more than putting laundry away, there was no reason to say no.

He’d seen how Heather was going out of her way with him and it was the least he could do for her.

It was her family and there was part of him that wanted them to at least tolerate him. Not like or accept. He didn’t care so much about that.

Tolerate would be enough, he supposed.

He was barely tolerated growing up so it’d be an improvement

He got off the elevator at Heather’s and walked to the door. He knew it’d be unlocked and opened it to see two men sitting on the couch laughing.

They turned their heads and stopped. Heather was right—he was bigger than them. The same age as Gavin, he’d been told. Or just a few months younger, as Gavin would be thirty-four months after he’d be thirty-three.

“Boys,” Heather said. “This is Luke Remington. Luke, my brothers, Noah and Gavin.”

He moved forward and shook their hands. “Nice to meet you,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“We haven’t heard all that much about you,” Gavin said. He could see the older brother taking the lead here.

“Not much to say,” Luke said.

“I told them that,” she said. “Don’t let them kid you. They know how we met.”

He lifted an eyebrow at her. That didn’t mean much to him considering not everyone knew their situation. Just Daisy. “At the wedding?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said. There was a slight blush to her cheeks and Noah seemed to catch on.

“What happened at the wedding?” Noah asked.

“Nothing,” she said. “I thought he was hot in his tux. Nothing wrong with that, is there?”

He laughed. He knew that. How could he not when they ended up in his hotel room? “Your sister didn’t look too shabby in her dress.”

“You had a dress on?” Gavin asked. “You never wear dresses.”

“It was a wedding,” she said firmly. “And you don’t know what I look like when I go out.”
