He marched into the kitchen. “Get the fuck out of here.”

“You can’t tell me what to do,” his mother said.

“Don’t bet on it. This isn’t your house. If you had any compassion at all, you’d see how much stress Grandma is under right now with everything. That you wouldn’t hold anything she said right now against her and just be there for her. But nope, not you. It’s all about you just like it’s been your whole life. If she won’t tell you to leave, then I will.”

“You don’t want me to leave, do you, Mom?”

He looked at his grandmother. “It’s for the best right now. Sawyer is right. I need to focus on me and your father and you are bringing the worst out of me and Sawyer. Give it a week or so once we calm down. If you want to go see Dad in the hospital and can be civil, then do it. If not, don’t work him up. We don’t need it right now.”

His mother walked to the front of the house, grabbed her jacket and purse and slammed out the door.

“That was a good time for all to see,” he said. “Are you okay?”

“Thanks, Sawyer,” his grandmother said. “Your grandfather is normally the one that has to tell her to cut the shit or leave. I guess I’ve had a harder time with it. There is part of me that just wished she would have grown up.”

“She’s in her fifties,” he said. “Why are you still hoping for it?”

His grandmother laughed. “I don’t know. When you have kids someday you’ll understand. You always have hopes and dreams that they do the best they can. Or live the best life they can.”

“I think my mother believes she’s living the best life she can,” he said. “That’s why she’s so selfish. It’s all about her.”

“I don’t know why or where she gets it from,” his grandmother said. “But you’re right. It’s time to let it go. She didn’t do right by you and I’m sorry for that. I feel I’m to blame somewhere.”

This was the last thing he wanted to happen. He had to remember what he’d just said to his mother. That he couldn’t hold anything his grandmother said right now against her.

“You’ve got nothing to be sorry for or feel any blame about. You and Grandpa were there for me for years when Dad was on the road and Mom was out living her life.”

“I know,” his grandmother said. “It doesn’t make it right.”

“One thing I’ve learned about life. What we think is right and wrong doesn’t mean everyone else does.”

“No,” his grandmother said. “Can I get you some lunch? Then we can go to the hospital together.”

“How is Grandpa doing? I talked to him last night and he sounded good but tired.”

He’d been calling at least once a day to talk to his grandfather and more than that to check in with his grandmother.

He barely had time to do his job let alone see Faith and spend time with her, but she didn’t seem to have an issue with it.

He supposed that was one small favor in all of this.

He found a woman that wasn’t needy, didn’t care about his long hours, and gave him space to deal with personal issues while wanting to help and not make him feel guilty.

Guess there were some decent women out there after all.

Dirty Little Secret

Almost three weeks later, Faith and Sawyer pulled into her parents’ house on a Sunday afternoon.

Sawyer had gone back to his grandparents for the past two weekends to check on his grandfather and make sure they had what they needed. He’d been worried that Faith felt neglected, but she’d told him to get it out of his head.

Besides, she liked having the time to herself.

Until she was missing him and then wondered what might be wrong with her when she’d never felt like that before with other men she’d dated.

It’s not like she could talk much about it either. She talked some with her mother but would have preferred to talk with Margo. But Margo and she worked different hours and she wouldn’t talk about personal things at work when Margo might be home.
