“Why are you tense?” she asked Sawyer before they got out of his SUV.

“I didn’t think I was.”

“I can see it,” she said. “Do you wish you’d gone to see your grandfather? You could have. We could have rescheduled this.”

“No,” he said. “I know it’s hard for Liam and Margo to get time off and they made it so they’d go in later and they could be here.”

“I’m not sure why it mattered,” she said. “They met you.”

He grinned at her. “Meeting me for two minutes isn’t the same as sitting down and talking to me.”

“I get it, but they would have understood with everything going on in your life.”

“My grandmother was adamant she didn’t want me to come this weekend. I’m not sure why, but she said she had it covered. I talked to my grandfather and he’s doing great. Maybe she wants to give him hell and doesn’t want me to be there.”

She laughed. It sounded like Gretta Long was a character. “Why would she give him hell?”

“I’m not sure. I think he’s still grouchy, but she’s so relieved everything is on track. It might be more that my grandmother is overdoing it and he’s giving her hell so she wants to give it right back.”

“When you love someone, you do those things,” she said. “That’s what I’ve always been told and how they do it in my family.”

“I’m seeing that is how it’s done in my family too,” he said. “Not that I had any doubt.”

He hadn’t said another word about his mother and she hadn’t asked. She’d thought it was horrible when he confessed the fight he’d had.

She knew it was good for him to get it off his chest, but to hear your mother say she wasn’t sure she wanted you had to be devastating.

“And you shouldn’t. Everyone has one deadbeat in their family,” she said. “Whether it’s financially or emotionally.”

He grinned at her. “That is true.”

They got to the front door as they’d been holding back while she talked to him. She wanted to make sure he was fine. She knew her father and mother would be great. But they’d been dying to meet him.

“Hi everyone,” Faith said, walking in. “This is Sawyer. Sawyer, my mother, Lynn, and my father, Connor. You met Liam and Margo already.”

“It’s so nice to meet you,” her father said, moving forward. “Even more so now that you know our family’s dirty little secret and are still sticking around.”

Her jaw dropped. “What are you talking about, Dad?”

“Aunt Jolene is the dirty little secret,” Liam said. “Though she can’t keep a secret, but we know she’s little and she’s dirty in a sneaky kind of way. That’s what you meant, right, Dad?”

“Exactly what I meant,” her father said.

“It seems your sister is rubbing off on my grandparents. But Faith tells me you’re aware how we really met?”

Her mother smiled. “She told us. Not sure my sister-in-law is going to believe it.”

“There’s a police report to prove it,” Faith said. “You can’t make that up.”

“My sister will find anything she can to say she had a hand in this,” her father said.

“Who cooked today?” Faith asked.

Her mother lifted an eyebrow. “I cooked with your brother’s help. He gave me a new recipe and he’s hounding me to make sure I’m doing it all right. I taught him how to cook.”

“Liam brought me bread,” her father said. “No one makes bread like my son.”

Her mother scowled, but she’d heard that comment before and knew it was the truth. “Do I get any?” Faith asked.
